Fletch Backs Rooney's Fiery Streak
Darren Fletcher insists Wayne Rooney's fiery temperament brings
the very best out of the United striker.
Rooney was sent off in Wednesday's draw with Villarreal after
sarcastically applauding referee Kim Milton Nielsen's decision
to book him for a challenge on Quique Alvarez.
While it left United clinging on to a solitary point rather than
continuing their push for all three, Fletcher says the team needs
the 19-year-old striker's volatile edge.
Fletcher told MUTV: "Wayne plays better when things aren't going his way,
perhaps when he's not having a good game or the referee's against him.
「Wayne在情勢對他不利時，或許是他自己踢的不好、或裁判判罰不如意時，
反而會表現的更好。」
"He's got that little bit inside him spurring him on
and you can't take that away because that's when he's at his best."
The Scotland midfielder echoed Sir Alex Ferguson's post-match view
that Rooney's first booking was harsh.
"He was unfortunate with the sending off but he was showing hunger
to get the ball back," said Fletch. "It was a soft foul and, well,
you can't really comment on the referee but Wayne is a quality player
who'll be missed."
While United had been well on top in the El Madrigal stadium
until Rooney's untimely departure, Fletcher still sees the result
as a point gained.
He said: "Villarreal are a top team and they've shown that
in the Spanish league with some great results, especially at home.
I think it's a good point.
"The defence marshalled us brilliantly and in the end we got a good draw.
We created a couple of chances but unfortunately we didn't take them."
Despite a second consecutive stalemate, Fletch remains happy
with United's start to the season.
"We've not lost, we got a good draw here tonight
and there's a good atmosphere about the place," he said.
"We've got a good team and when we perform as well as we can
and show a good appetite we can't go wrong."
