Sir Alex Plans Protection For Rooney
Sir Alex Ferguson will be resolutely selfish to protect Wayne Rooney
from making an ill-advised hasty return from a broken foot.
The United boss acknowledges that everyone wants their share of the
20-year-old forward's talents, but won't allow the player's fitness
to be compromised.
"It's very important for the boy not to go to the World Cup half-fit
or even three-quarters fit and not do himself or England justice,"
he told MUTV.
"A lot of people might think I'm selfish in that respect," he added,
"but Wayne is the most important player in the team at Manchester United.
"We have to ensure the boy is going to be fit at the start of the season
for us. We all become selfish in that respect.
"England are selfish and Manchester United are selfish because they
want the best for their operation."
Sir Alex has learnt from lessons of the past with David Beckham, who
suffered a similar injury before the last World Cup.
"To go to a World Cup tournament you can't have anyone half-fit," he
added. "That's happened before in the past. I think David Beckham was
not fit when he went to the World Cup in 2002."
The United bosses self-confessed selfishness does not mean he is
hopeful Rooney misses the tournament. Far from it. The club brought
an oxygen chamber to the training ground to assist his recovery from
the well-documented broken fourth metatarsal in his right foot.
"What we've done with Wayne is assist him in every possible way,"
Sir Alex added. "He's tried the oxygen chamber; he hasn't enjoyed
it but he tried it.
"They've not got absolutely conclusive evidence the oxygen chamber
actually works but there's nothing against it. Everything is worth
trying and that's what we're doing with Wayne.
"He's in good hands. He's got the boot off and he's walking normally
now which is good news."

的是魯尼，他恢復情況喜人，有望趕上對瑞典的最後一場小組賽。
國家隊隊醫斯瓦德將在5月26日親自前往曼徹斯特對他的蹠骨傷勢進行複查，屆時可
以確認魯尼能否趕在世界盃期間順利復出。
唯一對魯尼復出唱反調的是曼聯主帥弗格森，他發出警告說：「再說一遍，魯尼如
果傷只好了一半，哪怕是好了四分之三，那他也不會去德國」，「我知道有人會說我自
私，但魯尼是曼聯最重要的球員，我必須確保他以最佳狀態迎接新賽季。從這個角度來
說，英格蘭國家隊同樣也有私心。」
