This year’s PFA Young Player Award went to Manchester United and England
striker Wayne Rooney, who arrived later in the evening after playing - and
scoring - at Old Trafford earlier in the afternoon against Newcastle United.
As well as several of Rooney’s United team-mates, Newcastle captain Alan
Shearer had also made the dash down from Lancashire to attend the dinner.
Speaking about his award, Rooney said: “Obviously for any footballer to
receive any award is a great achievement, and especially so when it is one
voted for by all your fellow professionals.
“As a footballer, you are always looking to improve and learn from the
people around you.
“If I keep learning and my feet on the ground, then hopefully I can start
winning more trophies.”
Rooney’s best chance of a trophy with his club this season is probably the
FA Cup, where United will face Arsenal.
And he commented: “We have got the FA Cup final to look forward to and it
is obviously going to be a tough game - but if we can win that, then it will
be a good trophy for all of us.
“We have been a bit disappointed with the way the league has gone, but
hopefully we can get second place and win the FA Cup.”

阿森納，他說：「我們已經進入足總杯決賽並期待取勝。這明顯是一場艱苦的比賽，但如
果我們能奪冠，這對我們將是一個很好的獎勵。我們對於已經進行的聯賽感到有些失望，
但希望我們能夠取得第二並贏得足總杯。」
