從非聯賽俱樂部加盟富勒姆還不到18個月，斯莫林就同意在2010年7月1日加盟曼聯。
斯莫林是一名速度很快的後衛，在霍奇森夢幻的2009/10賽季中，斯莫林扮演了重要
的角色，富勒姆在這個賽季闖進了歐聯決賽。他的出色發揮使得他進入了英格蘭U21國家
隊，他還引起了曼聯球探的關注，曼聯球探認為他是一名不能錯過的天才球員。
曼聯在2010年1月就與富勒姆達成了斯莫林的轉會協議，不過他在賽季餘下時間都繼
續留在了克拉文農場。
當時弗格森把斯莫林形容為「一名極具天賦的年輕中衛，我們已經關注他幾個月了
