Holiday blues for Saha

LOUIS Saha is going to be a reluctant holidaymaker this summer.
The Manchester United striker's season was devastated by persistent
knee problems and a calf injury.
It reduced the Frenchman's contribution to 20 appearances, of which
just 11 were starts. He never managed a run of more than two games,
and he scored two goals in nine months.
Four separate absences with a knee injury and that late-season calf
complaint forced Saha to write off his FA Cup final chances at the
beginning of the month.
Though he made three substitute appearances in the final trio of
Premiership games, he did not make the bench in Cardiff.
Now he cannot wait to return from vacation and start building up
to next term - even before United's early return to training on June 27.
"Towards the end of the season my girlfriend was talking about
going on holiday here and there, but I couldn't begin to even
think about it," said Saha.
"I didn't really want the season to stop at all after the nightmare
I have had, so I couldn't start organising holidays. It was too hard
to even consider one!
Loved
"If I could have found a game somewhere this close season, then I
would have loved to have been a part of it to keep things going.
But I wasn't chosen for the France squad, so there was nothing for
me to do.
"The best thing for me to do now is to start preparing myself for
next season so I am 100 per cent or even 200 per cent! I have to
deal with that.
"I will have a few weeks off; then I will come back and start training
by myself, doing everything I have to do to make sure I come back right.
"I am a big worker, so I will always do my best to get things right,
and I am not afraid of putting the hours in during the summer to ensure
I will be fully fit for the start of pre-season.
"This season has been my worst ever, and my confidence has been down
because of my fitness.
"But I have to put all that behind me now and concentrate on the future."
Saha's first knee problem cropped up at Euro 2004 with France and it
forced him out of United's pre- season preparations and the start of
the campaign.
The 26-year-old from Paris played two matches in August before being
sidelined again for five weeks.
He was involved for eight matches during the autumn before a knee
injury KO'd him again from mid-November to mid-January.
Another eight-match involvement ended with a fourth knee complaint
and that wrecked a further two months.
To compound his agony, he came back at Norwich in April and lasted
just 17 minutes before a calf strain struck.
Saha has learned during this frustrating season to forget searching
for answers and just get on with the recovery.
"Everything becomes fatal," Saha said.
"You get sad and look for explanations. Maybe that is not the best
thing to do.
"You should keep working and get on with things; instead I was trying
to find the solution all the time. But it doesn't work like that.
"You have to remain upbeat. There are many people in worse positions
than me, so you have to be happy.
"It has been difficult though. But my main job now is to concentrate
on my fitness."
