Giggs Still Chasing Euro Century
Contrary to some reports in today's media, Ryan Giggs has not completed
100 European appearances for Mancheser United.
It was widely stated that the Welsh winger's turnout against Benfica,
in which he scored United's opening goal and made Ruud van Nistelrooy's
match winner, took him to the rare milestone - when in fact
it was his 99th appearance.
The discrepancy possibly arose from UEFA's statistics handbook,
which included the 1999 Intercontinental Cup (South America / Europe)
against Palmeiras in Giggs' list.
Manchester United's official statistics do not recognise this as
a European competition and, as such, Ryan is still one short of his century.
Like the Community Shield, the club classes the Intercontinental Cup
in the 'Others' column rather than 'European.'
If selected, Giggs will reach the milestone in October's clash
with Lille at Old Trafford. The likelihood of his appearance
is underscored by the continuing European suspension of Wayne Rooney.
