Giggs wins greatest-ever goal poll
4/11/05 10:11 PM
Ryan Giggs' goal against Arsenal in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final
has been voted the greatest United goal of all-time.
The Welshman's mazy run and finish topped a list compiled by
Sky One and revealed in a TV show, Man Utd's Greatest Goals,
on Friday 4 November. The runner-up was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s
Treble-securing winner against Bayern Munich, also in 1999,
while David Beckham’s halfway line stunner against Wimbledon in 1996
was voted third.
The public, including thousands of ManUtd.com visitors,
picked their favourite goals from a shortlist of 50.
The shortlist was selected by three experts: Reds legend Pat Crerand,
football journalist Paul McCarthy and ex-Manchester City boss Peter Reid.
ManUtd.com will publish the top 50 next week. In the meantime,
this was the top ten:
1. Ryan Giggs v Arsenal, FA Cup
2. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer v Bayern Munich, Champions League Final
3. David Beckham v Wimbledon, Premiership
4. Wayne Rooney V Newcastle, Premiership
5. Eric Cantona v Sunderland, Premiership
6. Ruud van Nistelrooy v Fulham, Premiership
7. George Best v Sheffield Utd, Division 1
8. Eric Cantona v Liverpool, FA Cup Final
9. Roy Keane v Juventus, Champions League
10. Wayne Rooney v Middlesbrough, FA Cup
The producers of Man Utd's Greatest Goals would like to thank
all ManUtd.com readers who voted for their favourite goal.
