Ryan Raring To Go Against Portsmouth
Ryan Giggs can't wait to play for United on Saturday after
enduring one of his longest-ever spells on the sidelines.
The Welsh winger has been out of action since fracturing
his cheekbone against Lille on 18 October. But this week he returned to
full training, just in time to face Portsmouth.
"It was great to finally join in with the lads on Thursday
and play some football again," says Ryan, who turned 32 on Wednesday.
"I’ve been able to run and do most things in training,
like passing and ball-work. But I’ve been doing it mostly on my own
because if I’d taken a knock on it, I would have been back to square one."
Previewing the Portsmouth game for Manchester United Radio, Ryan admitted:
"I can’t wait for the match. Hopefully I can get rid of
all the frustration that’s built up over the last six or seven weeks.
"No player likes watching and this has been one of my longest periods
out of the team. It’s been a stop-start season for me so far.
I'm hoping to have a run of games now and stay injury-free."
Speaking six weeks to the day after his operation,
Ryan still feels aggrieved at the way his injury was overlooked
by the referee and his assistants during the Lille match.
"I wasn't very pleased that the ref didn’t spot it," says Ryan,
understating his anger.
"You could actually see the dent in my face!
Initially it didn’t feel too bad and I carried on.
But then after five minutes I started to get blurred vision
in my right eye and that’s when the manager brought me off."
Even though his general fitness is good, Ryan believes it will take him
"three or four games" to regain his full match fitness.
But it should help him to be in a team that's now functioning well
and chasing a fourth consecutive win in the Premiership.
"Since the Middlesbrough game we’ve played really well," assesses Ryan.
"Especially in the second half against West Ham.
That was a great performance – the movement, the passing…
everything about it was good. We could have scored four or five.
Hopefully we can carry on from there against Portsmouth."
