Fergie: Giggs will face Pompey
2/12/05 12:11 PM
Giggs Returns For Pompey Clash
Sir Alex
Fergie
Sir Alex
Ryan Giggs will play some part against Portsmouth on Saturday
after a seven-week absence with a fractured cheekbone.
The Welsh veteran suffered the horrific blow in October against Lille,
but has now been rested long enough to return to action.
Speaking at his pre-game press conference, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed:
"He'll be involved tomorrow without question.
Whether he starts or comes on is a matter of consideration
but he will certainly be involved."
Giggs' return is a huge boost to the Scot not just going into
another vital Premiership game, but also next week's crucial
make-or-break Champions League tie with Benfica.
"We've an important game on Wednesday in Benfica
and I think it's vital Ryan gets some minutes on the clock," he admitted.
On the back of three consecutive Premiership wins,
and with experienced players like Giggs, Gary Neville and Louis Saha
gradually returning to the fold, Ferguson can now begin resting
the younger players who have deputised in their absence.
"I think we had a difficult period when we had young players
trying to do the job of men," he said. "Now having experienced players back
gives me an opportunity to rest some of these young players
who have been carrying the burden for so long."
Portsmouth visit Old Trafford managerless, moored in the Premiership
relegation zone and amid a frenzy of media speculation over
the eventual successor to the recently-departed Alain Perrin.
However, Sir Alex insists that the visitors' plight is an irrelevance
and still expects a tough game.
"They're fighting for their lives and you think that they'll be
focusing on the game," he said.
"Joe Jordan, who has been in charge this week, will have a job of
balancing all the things that have been said in the papers
with focusing on the match. That's not easy, but we still have a job to do.
"They'll come, they'll play five across the midfield like they did
in their last away game at Liverpool and they'll try and prove hard to beat."
With a host of contenders linked to the Fratton Park hotseat
including former boss Harry Redknapp, Ferguson isn't prepared to
predict who will end up taking the reins.
He admitted: "Normally we get a few titbits here and get to know things
that are happening but there's been that much speculation over this job
that I just couldn't tell you who's getting it!"
Report by Steve Bartram, at Carrington.
