ROY KEANE last night offered a unique insight into the world awaiting
Wayne Rooney at Manchester United and warned Britain's most expensive
player of the pitfalls that lie ahead.
The straight-talking United skipper revealed an extraordinary world
of hangers-on, back-stabbers and a culture at Old Trafford where players
can rarely trust anyone new they meet.
"You learn out of experience to choose your friends carefully," said Keane
- who was last night formally charged with assault on a 16-year-old boy.
"Just when you think someone's not such a bad guy, I guarantee you they'll
ask you for something. I'll meet 100 people in the next two weeks and
99 per cent of them will ask me for something.
"You try to get to know people and even give them the benefit of the doubt
but you can guarantee they'll stitch you up.
"Some people think it's good just to be seen with you, or they'll tell
their friends they know you. It's all b*******. I could give some perfect
examples of people who I've looked after and then they come out with
some s*** about you.
"It's not like being a prisoner but you always have to have your guard up."
When Rooney joined United, Sir Alex Ferguson declared the best guidance
he would receive would be from the experienced heads in the squad
like Keane, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville.
And Rooney has already tasted the less palatable side of life
in the public eye with revelations about his private life. Keane warned
him not to pose for photos in the classic 'at-home' style of magazines
such as OK! or Hello!
"If I ever did that I'd love them to come to my house at five o'clock
on a Tuesday," said Keane.
"I'd love that. They'd see the dog, mud, the kids screaming, my missus
would have her jeans on and I'd just have a tracksuit on.
And Keane also had a word of warning for Rooney and other young players
coming into the money-drenched world of football about the company they keep.
"I don't need the limelight and adulation," said Keane. "Unfortunately
some people do. That's why I'm not open to so-called friends.
"Three of my best friends are lads I used to play football with
at Rockmount. I was out with them a few weeks ago and they were
hammering me about my clothes and things. That's what friends do."
Although Keane remains United's top earner on 80,000-a-week, the combative
midfielder admitted he could have made even more money had he accepted
one of several offers to leave Old Trafford.
The 33-year-old, rated by Fergie as the best player he has ever had,
has spent a decade at United and insisted his enduring affection for
the club kept him there.
"I could have been financially a lot better off if I'd left United,"
Keane told the fanzine United We Stand. "I could have gone to Italy,
Spain or Bayern Munich.
"I'm not playing the poor man with United because that's where my heart
is and they've looked after me brilliantly. I've been at the club
a long time and there's a genuine attachment. But if it had been any club
other than United, I would definitely have gone.
"I would love to have seen if I could have adapted and played
a different type of football at another big club."
Keane's belligerent performance in United's 2-1 win over Liverpool
on Monday suggested his career is far from over.
Yet he is acutely aware his time at the top is coming to an end.
"I was in a car last season with Nicky Butt and we were listening
to one of those talk-in shows," Keane explained.
"Some bloke comes on saying Nicky Butt doesn't do it anymore.
And I'm laughing to myself as I'm driving.
"Then the next caller comes on and says Roy Keane is finished.
And then we both started howling. But that's football.
One minute you're a god, the next you're finished.
"I understand that. And does it really matter how I'm remembered
when there will be someone else along next week or next year?"
Keane's determination to give his all in the United cause was echoed
by fellow club stalwart Gary Neville.
Neville warned Arsenal and Chelsea that Manchester United have put
their dismal start to the season behind them and are ready to challenge
for the Premiership title.
United closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to seven points with
Monday's 2-1 win over Liverpool and Neville believes Sir Alex Ferguson's
players can reel in Arsene Wenger's side.
"We've got to go and win the title back this season," said Neville.
"And if we play to our capabilities, we'll win it.
"We've got some great new signings and we've got Rio Ferdinand back too.
"Losing Rio was a huge blow last season, and hopefully we won't have
the injury problems we had last season."
Threat
Although Neville will be out for another two weeks with a fractured knee,
the return of Ferdinand after an eight-month ban has gone a significant
way to giving United a settled back four.
Once Neville returns, United boss Fergie will have all his defenders
at his disposal for the first time this season, with Mikael Silvestre
and Ferdinand his first-choice central defensive partnership.
Silvestre, two-goal hero of United's crucial win over Liverpool,
hailed the return of Ferdinand and said: "It's great to have Rio back.
Against Liverpool it looked like we had been playing together for weeks."
As revealed by Mirror Sport last week, goalkeeper Tim Howard's position
was under threat because of a number of errors and Roy Carroll is
likely to benefit.
Fergie plans to give Howard a lengthy break to allow the 24-year-old
to regain his former sharpness.
"Tim would be the first to agree he is needing a spell out,"
said the United boss.FERGUSON: Advice
