Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted to see United follow their victory over Chelsea with a 3-1 win over Charlton at The Valley. A first half strike from Alan Smith, plus two second half goals from captain for the day Ruud van Nistelrooy gave the Reds all three points. Fergie was full of praise for his strike pairing of van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney after the game, and he also took time to pay tribute to his former skipper Roy Keane. "It's a terrific result for us and a very important one after the good result we had against Chelsea," he told Sky Sports. "It was a game of great goals and great football and I thought Charlton played their part very well. "Ruud and Rooney tormented their defence throughout the match but we enjoyed a lucky break when we got ourselves back in front so soon after they'd equalised; that was a killer blow for them. "Van Nistelrooy's finish was unbelievable [for the second goal] and I was pleased to see us consolidate our victory after Ruud scored the third goal. "We knew we couldn't afford a defeat and let's hope this match is the start of a good run. If we can produce that kind of appetite and desire to win in every game, we'll be hard to beat. "I was pleased to hear the fans pay tribute to Roy," added the Reds boss. "He's been a fantastic player for this club - the best I've had in my time and one of the best in the history of the club. "It's been a difficult week but the nature of our club means we have these difficult periods from time to time and we have to come through them. "I had a very amicable meeting with Roy and we wished each other well." United's attentions now turn to Tuesday's Champions League tie with Villarreal at Old Trafford, a game Sir Alex says United simply have to win. "I can't think of a more important game for us in Europe over the last few years," admitted Fergie. "Our ambitions to do well in the competition are always there and we have to win this game to ensure we qualify for the next stage."
