Ferguson: We Rise To The Challenge And Move On
Neville
:PPP
Sir Alex Ferguson insists his side is moving forward
- and the United boss continues to strive to build a new team.
Ahead of the crucial Group D clash against Villarreal,
Sir Alex fielded several questions about the effect Roy Keane’s departure
has had on his squad.
"Our concentration has to be on the game," said Sir Alex,
speaking at his pre-match press conference.
The United boss deflected one direct question on his reasoning
for letting Roy Keane go. But he then discussed subjects such as
the club’s next long-term captain and how the young players
in his squad must add experience and consistency to their game.
His message couldn’t have been clearer: he is only looking forward.
“The team that won the European Cup in 1999 can’t last forever,” he said.
“That’s natural, players age. That’s the horrible part of
managing this club for a long time, you watch your great players get older.
“You have to make changes in a quicker fashion than some other clubs
can because the expectation is so great here. Hopes are high.
But when we make decisions it is with no other aim than to
make the team better and keep us at the top.”
The first match post-Keane brought victory against Charlton,
which pleased the United manager.
"Saturday was very encouraging. We played some excellent football.
There was tremendous spirit about us and the supporters were great,”
he said.
But the departure of the Irishman has left a hole in United’s midfield
that must be filled, above all, if the Reds are to arrest
a worrying trend in Europe. In 2002 United went out at the semi final
stage against Bayer Leverkusen; the quarter finals against Real Madrid
in 2003; and the first knockout stage in the last two seasons
against FC Porto and AC Milan.
“We are aware of that,” said the United boss.
“That’s the great thing about our club. We always try to improve
and look for areas where we can do better. In fairness to us,
in the last couple of years we have been trying to build a new team.
There is evidence of that.
“If you look at the graph of teams who win the European Cup,
they mainly come from experienced teams, maybe with an average age of 28-30.
We can’t say that about our team.
“I don’t think we have enough experience at the moment.
That’s a handicap. What you get with the present young players
is incredible ability. What we hope is that they can marry that
with consistency because that is the key factor in getting to
a long run in European football.
“But We have seen the ability of our young players in the last two games.
Now we want that consistently. But we also know that young players
are more prone to dips in form. It’s our job to get as much experience
into the team as we can.”
Keane’s abrupt exit from Old Trafford has also thrown open the contest
for the club’s captaincy. Gary Neville returns against Villarreal,
but van Nistelrooy will continue with the armband.
“I’ve been very lucky to have a succession of great captains,”
Sir Alex said. “At the moment, we have had a fantastic response from Ruud.
He will be captain on Tuesday. The manner of the person
and his demeanour is excellent. Everything is right
and we’re getting a great response.
"Every time I have listened to Ruud after games,
he has always spoken well. He is clear, precise
and speaks with intelligence.
“He’s Dutch… Does he have an opinion?” the manager joked.
“He’s very good. We’ve had a fantastic response from him,
the players have responded to him also. When Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs
come back I have a decision to make. But I don’t think it is
a monumental decision. I think the more important issue is to
make sure we’re winning games.
“Ryan has had the armband on many occasions if Roy wasn’t available.
It is purely on seniority and that is quite right.
For someone who has served the club for as long as Ryan Giggs has,
he deserves to be recognised. Ryan has great respect.
He is a wonderful professional. Then you have Gary Neville.
He’s been a great servant and is a loyal man.
He’s very emotional and enthusiastic. They all have different qualities.
“And there are other players at the club who have attributes
that could make them captain, like Alan Smith and Wayne Rooney.
Wayne is always telling me anyway!”
There is no doubt that replacing Roy Keane – as a captain,
a talisman and an incredible footballer - will be a difficult,
arguably impossible task. United will not find those qualities in one player.
Instead Ferguson will seek to find those attributes in two or three of
his current squad, and with a new midfield signing either in January
or the summer.
Asked if he enjoys the difficult times at United, Ferguson said:
"You have to grab the nettles sometimes.
This is an occasion where we have to show what we are.
We’ve done it well against Charlton, and Chelsea.
We shown we’ve got ability. Now we want to add experience
and consistency to that ability."
Report by Ben Hibbs.
