Roy Keane: Five Great Memories


It seems almost disrespectful to select only five great moments
from Roy Keane’s career.

You could pick at random almost any five matches from the 1999/00 season
and be guaranteed that you’d have selected a game in which he’d been
the stand out player on the pitch. Yet whilst that was his best season
for the Reds, it was certainly not his only.

His United career was littered with match-winning displays
and here ManUtd.com picks out five of his best Red moments...


United 3 Sheffield United 0, 18 August 1993 
1993年 八月十八號  主場3-0大勝 Sheffield United

Not all players enjoy the type of debut that Wayne Rooney did
against Fenerbahce but Keane certainly came close on his home debut.
In his first game since his summer move from Nottingham Forest
he netted twice to show the Old Trafford faithful what was to come
over the next decade. Playing alongside Paul Ince and Bryan Robson,
he was given the freedom to get forward and took only 16 minutes
to notch his first United goal, a stunning low drive.
Shortly before half-time he netted again, another low shot past Alan Kelly,
to leave Sir Alex predicting, “I think he’s got what it takes to
become one of the best players in the country.”
They turned out to be prophetic words.

不是所有的球員都像Rooney一樣，能享受在初登場時在歐冠賽場上的帽子戲法，
但Keane的主場初登場的表現也算很接近了。
在Keane從諾丁漢森林隊轉會過來為曼聯出征的第一場比賽裡，
他以兩顆進球向曼聯球迷展示了接下來的十年他將做出的貢獻。
這場他的中場搭檔是Paul Ince和隊長Bryan Robson，Keane踢的位置靠前，
他只花了十六分鐘就進了他曼聯生涯的第一顆球，那是一個技驚四座的低平勁射。
下半場開始不久他又進了一球，這次仍是一個越過守門員的低平球。
Sir Alex看了之後預測：「我認為他有成為這個國家裡最好球員之一的潛力。」
Sir Alex說對了。


Juventus 2 United 3, 21 April 1999

If one game more than any other sums up his twelve-and-a-half years
at United it’s the Champions League semi-final second leg against Juventus
in April 1999; he was magnificent. Trailing 3-1 on aggregate he dragged
the Reds back into the game with a 24th minute header from a corner.
Next he won the midfield battle with Edgar Davids and Zinedine Zidane,
both in their prime, and then gave as inspirational a captain’s performance
as you are ever likely to see, helping the side to a 3-2 victory
and the final in Barcelona. What made his performance all the more
remarkable was that it had come despite knowing he’d miss the game
in the Nou Camp. His first half booking meant he’d miss the biggest game
of his career, yet he’d put the team’s progress above
his own disappointment to lead by example. This, without question,
was his best performance for the Reds.

如果要用一場比賽來總結Keane十二年半的曼聯生涯，那就是與Juventus
在一九九九年四月歐冠准決賽第二回合的勝利，那時他太偉大了。
當英扎吉開場連進兩球使曼聯以總進球數1-3落後時，
Keane在第24分鐘，以接應Beckham角球的後插上頭球破門，
獨力把曼聯拉回比賽競爭中。（當時上半場才剛過一半，進了球的Keane沒有慶祝，
只是奔跑著揮手叫隊友回復陣形，繼續拼鬥）接下來他在中場拼搶和節奏控制戰勝了
在職業技術顛峰的Edgar Davids和Zinedine Zidane，展現了一個隊長能做到的
最激勵人心的表現，帶領球隊拿到作客都靈3-2的勝利，將希望延續到決戰Barcelona。
而他的表現之所以如此不凡，是在於當時在上半場拿到一張黃牌的情況下，
縱使曼聯晉級，Keane也註定不能參與歐冠決賽，他職業生涯中最重要的一場比賽。
但是他把球隊的晉級希望遠放在自己的失望之前，以身作則的付出。
豪無疑問這是他在曼聯最棒的一場比賽。

（事後Keane自己說，因為沒踢過決賽，他也不覺得自己有得到歐冠獎盃，
  因為決賽中再度展現奇蹟的不是他，是他辛苦的隊友。
  雖然結果是好的，但事後想起來，
  他在准決賽前拿到的第一張不必要的黃牌讓他累積停賽，
  搞不好還可能害曼聯在決賽中頓失領導時輸球。）

Arsenal 1 United 2, 22 August 1999 
1999年八月二十二號  包辦兩球作客逆轉2-1勝槍手

The Irishman was not known for his goal scoring ability during
his last few years at Old Trafford but it wasn’t always that way,
this game being a case in point. Up against his nemesis Patrick Vieira,
he gave his usual commanding display, controlling the midfield,
before twice making marauding forward runs to find the back of
the Arsenal net. At half-time United had trailed to a Freddie Ljungberg goal
but fourteen minutes after the break Keane struck his first after
combining well with Andy Cole to shoot past Alex Manninger.
Having restored parity many teams would have then settled for a point
 – not Roy Keane. With two minutes remaining he pushed forward again,
made the most of a deflected Giggs shot, and finished from six-yards
to silence Highbury.

在曼聯生涯後期，愛爾蘭硬漢Keane的踢球特徵不再像初期時包辦許多進球，
但總有些日子事情不是這樣走，這場比賽就是最好的例子。
Keane一如往常的控制中場，指揮若定，把宿敵Vieira吃的死死的，
更重要的，他還兩度後上包辦曼聯所有進球，攻破Arsenal球門。
上半場結束曼聯0-1落後，Ferddie Ljungberg進了一球，
但下半場開始十四分鐘，Keane在和Andy Cole巧妙配合後進球擊敗門將Manninger。
很多隊伍在落後中追成平手，總想保持平局，甘願只拿保險一分，
Roy Keane從不這樣想。在整場比賽只剩兩分鐘時，Keane再度後上，
抓住Ryan Giggs折射過的射門球機會，在六碼線進球，把Highbury變成library。

（Keane自己說在Bryan Robson當隊長時的末期，雖然長期受傷病困擾，
  在場下卻常常扮演啟發照顧，引導年輕球員，和巧妙傳達SAF旨意的角色。
  有一天他和Keane一起吃飯喝點小酒聊天的時候，
  Robbo建議Keane可以嘗試踢靠後些，多多學習組織整個球隊的節奏，
  Robbo說他覺得這樣對Keane的長期生涯會有很大的幫助，
  Keane照做了。事後他依種種跡象覺得這是SAF傳達他戰術潛移默化的方法之一。
  在曼聯Ferguson時代，隊長和主教練的關係相當密切。
  事實上，當初SAF要簽Keane的時候曾徵詢過Robson的意見，
  雖然很明顯簽Keane就是要來取代Robbo的，他還是無私的推薦Keane，
  並在Keane剛來人生地不熟時很照顧他，帶他融入曼聯生活，
  以很不明顯但體貼的方式幫他解決生活上會對足球產生分心的問題。
  從某種角度來說，現在的Keano不就跟當年的Robson有些雷同嗎？
  曼聯隊長的無私血液是一脈相傳的）

2000年十二月八號  續留曼聯主場進球3-0大勝Valencia

This game was all about Roy Keane. Hours before the match he’d ended
weeks of speculation by signing a new contract to remain at the club
until 2003, then once the action began he gave another of
his most stirring displays. Old Trafford had reverberated with his name
throughout the first half and he duly rewarded the fans with the goal
they craved. Winning the ball deep in Valencia territory he advanced
unimpeded towards their penalty area before dispatching a 20-yard
pile-driver in the Spaniards’ net. There was little chance of
the Keane-fired euphoria in the stands diminishing after that
and the Reds’ skipper led his team to a 3-0 victory.
Fans left the ground singing his name believing there’d be many more
such performances to follow. They were right.

Roy Keane是這場比賽的唯一主角。開打前幾個小時Keane才剛剛結束了維持
好些個禮拜大家的臆測，簽下了一紙讓他在曼聯留到2003年的合約，
比賽開打後他再一次踢出他最激勵人心的表現。
上半場Old Trafford裡迴盪著球迷歡唱他的名字，
Keane則以一顆大家渴望的進球來回報球迷。
他先是在Valencia的後場搶下球，接著毫無阻礙的前進到禁區內，
然後以一顆二十碼勁射打破西班牙人的城門。
Keane所帶起的歡樂氣氛在此之後在看台上更是延綿不絕，
曼聯隊長帶領著他的球隊邁向3-0主場勝利。
球迷們看完比賽後，一邊離開一邊唱著他的名字，
他們相信日後會有更多像這樣的表現。他們是對的。

2005年二月一號  從球員通道開始的比賽  作客4-2逆轉狂勝槍手

This game will be remembered as much for the incident in the
players’ tunnel shortly before kick-off as it will the match itself.
Playing his captain’s role to perfection, he defended his team mates
following a confrontation after the pre-match warm-up by telling
his opposite number, Patrick Vieira, to leave his talking for the pitch.
The Irishman certainly did that himself. Rolling back the years
he dominated Vieira for 90 minutes, controlling the pace of the game
to lay down a platform from which the Reds twice came from behind to win 4-2.
Ryan Giggs, Ronaldo (2) and John O’Shea were the scorers
but there was no doubting the inspiration: Royston Maurice Keane.

關於這場比賽的記憶，開踢前短短幾分鐘在球員通道裡的事件和比賽本身都將同樣
被人們廣為傳誦。Keane把身為隊長的表現到完美極至，在賽前通道裡站出來捍衛
被Vieira挑釁的隊友(Gary Neville)，指著Vieira的鼻子叫他要耍狠在球場上耍。
愛爾蘭硬漢Keane自己顯然做到了。彷彿時光倒流，他像年輕好幾歲似的跑動，
整整九十分鐘讓Vieira無計可施，他控制著比賽的節奏，
打下基石讓紅魔們能在兩度落後中，兩度追上，最後逆轉客場4-2大勝。
四球分別由Ryan Giggs進一球, Ronaldo進兩球, 和John O'Shea完成最後一腳吊射，
但激發靈感的來源只有一個，那就是Roy Keane。
