Reds or bust for Scholes
REDS midfield star Paul Scholes says he wants to finish his career
at Old Trafford.
The former England star signed a new four-year contract
with United outfit on Friday, a deal which will take him to 34
and extend his overall Red Devils' service to an incredible 20 years.
As the most unassuming member of United's dressing room,
it is no surprise his negotiations took place aware from
the kind of unwanted publicity which accompanied Rio Ferdinand's decision
to commit his future to the club for a similar length of time.
But while Scholes' talks did take longer than the usual 30 seconds,
there was never any question of the 30-year-old not signing.
And if the new contract does not take him to the end of his career,
the Salford-born maestro will have no hesitation in eventually
agreeing one that does.
"I can't imagine playing for any other club," said Scholes.
"I suppose Phil Neville was saying exactly the same thing 12 months ago
but I certainly don't want to play for anyone else.
"The new contract has taken a while to do but I didn't want it
dragging on too much and I am delighted with it.
"Now it is out of the way, I can concentrate fully on my football."
Scholes' reference to Neville, who made his Premiership bow
for Everton against his old club at Goodison Park on Saturday,
is a valid one given the gradual break-up of United's famed `Class of 92'.
David Beckham and Nicky Butt exited Old Trafford in consecutive summers
before Neville while reports of sustained interest
in Sao Paulo full-back Cucinho is a clear threat to Gary Neville.
However, as his new squad takes shape, with Cristiano Ronaldo,
Darren Fletcher and John O'Shea all set to renew their contracts
in the coming days, there was never any question that
Sir Alex Ferguson would let Scholes leave.
While Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy have been
capturing all the headlines during United's promising start to the season,
Scholes has been going about his job with quiet efficiency,
hinting that he is now over the dip in from
which left him so disappointed last term.
Challenge
If United are to mount a sustained challenge to Chelsea
during this campaign, Scholes will have to hit his peak.
And as he looks around the dressing room, the influential midfielder
thinks there enough quality to make considerable inroads
into the 18-point gap Jose Mourinho's men established over the Red Devils
by the end of last season.
"We believe we are as good as anyone," he said.
"We had a lot of injuries at the beginning of last season,
while this season there are only a couple of people who are not fit.
"We are in good shape. We are a strong team and
we are determined to win our games."
With five goals in their opening two competitive games and none conceded,
United have started encouragingly enough.
Although they would have been frustrated by Hernan Crespo's
injury-time winner at Wigan yesterday and the two late goals
which saw Arsenal home against Newcastle,
at least United are up with the pace.
Even by this point 12 months ago, they had fallen three points
adrift of Chelsea and Arsenal after an opening day defeat
at Stamford Bridge, starting a run of just six points
from their first five games which wrecked any title hopes virtually
before they had begun.
"It is massively important for us not to fall behind," admitted Scholes.
"Last year we didn't have a great start.
We weren't playing well and the first five or six games
just weren't good enough.
"We are determined it will be different this season.
Everton is a tough place to go on the opening day,
but we got the win we wanted and we have to build on that
over the next nine months."
