Neville wary of Ronaldo By Phil McNulty Our man with England Gary Neville has said he will have to be at his best to cope with the threat of Portugal dangerman Cristiano Ronaldo in Thursday's Euro 2004 quarter-final. Ronaldo, a team-mate of Neville's at Manchester United team-mate, has been accused of over-indulgence in his first season at Old Trafford. But Neville insisted: "He's not a show pony, he's the real thing. "If he gets tackled nine times, he'll still want the ball the tenth time and believe he can get past you." Neville added: "He's a special talent. I won't get a second's rest. "He has surprised me since Christmas. I thought there were glimpses of brilliance before Christmas but after that, he has shown everyone that he's going to be a world-class player. "In this tournament, it's taken them two games to get him into the team but Carvalho, Deco and Valente have come in too, and it's made them a lot more enthusiastic and vibrant going forward. "Ronaldo looks a danger in the air, on the ground and in all positions. "We're going to have to be at our best but we played against the best eight days ago against Zidane and Henry." Neville said he will have to call on his experience of facing Ronaldo in training at United, but admitted that the team would have to defend well as a unit. "Ashley Cole and I are going to have to be at our very best against Ronaldo and Figo," he said. "Ronaldo's a fantastic player but I've played against him in training every day this season. "We're going to have to defend against them one on one, we're going to have to be tight and maybe get beaten at times, but just make sure that we've cover. "It's about basic, simple defending. The worry is not the stepover but the player who can go either way. He's got a strong left and right foot. That's the problem. "If you know that you can show someone down the left, for instance, then you're okay, but he can go inside you too." But Neville is in confident mood after England's 4-2 demolition of Croatia on Monday. "I don't think Portugal will have enjoyed what they saw from us - a high-energy game, power, pace, counter-attacking at speed, good passing," he said. "We just need to produce that performance on Thursday and have a bit of luck. "There is pressure and the expectations of a nation on them, but we have that too. "All the teams left in the tournament, their countries think they can win the tournament now."
