Moments to dedicate
The title sums up the essence of this book, these are moments from my
childhood, and they tell how much football enraptured me, from a young age.
These are stories of a child who abandoned everything for the pleasure of
playing with a ball. These are, in fact, slices of the experiences I have
lived up to now. Some of them left me glowing with joy, such as the first
time I was selected to train with Sporting's professional squad, the first
game with the first team, my first international appearance, my transfer to
Manchester, the trophies I have already won. And a lot more. Other experiences
were traumatic and led me to despair and tears, such as the period during
which I had to live alone at Sporting's training centre and could not bear
the homesickness for my family and friends. Or my father's death, a wound
that has still not healed.
This book is dedicated to his memory, for he is still present in my life and
I know that, wherever he is, he will still be as proud of me as he always
was, pride which he enjoyed announcing to the world. This dedication extends,
in the same proportion, to all the members of my family: my mother, Maria
Dolores, my siblings, Elma, Hugo and Catia, my bother-in-law Jose Pereira and
my cousin Nuno Viveiros. They are all that is most precious to me. It was
largely because of them that I decided to embark on this adventure, for they
were the ones who persuaded me to share with you a small part of my
experience of life.
My mother sitll treats me if I were a baby. I, Cristiano Ronaldo, like to
see myself as a kid. I will always fight to stay a kid, even when age states
the contrary, for only in that way I believe is it possible to face life's
adversities more light-heatedly, with more optimism, whilst preserving a
readiness to learn and improve. Always. That is how I act every day, whether
in casual situations, or in my professional capacity. To improve as a human
being, to value myself as a football professional, and to contribute even
more to the success of Manchester United.
I hope you appreciate these 「Moments」 of my life as much as I have
appreciated them. For this book is my image, reflected in the mirror
of my soul.
───────────────────────────────────────
I can recall without any problem the first time I saw Cristiano Ronaldo in
action. He was playing in a youth tournament in Portugal and I was lucky
enough to have been watching the match on television. Here was a singular
talent, so much so, that he made me sit up and take notice.
I decide there and then to keep an eye out for the youngster to see if my
first impression had been accurate or that I had seen him put in an
exceptional one-off performance.
The sight of this precociously talented youngster with the lightening pace
and equally quick feet eventually, inexplicably, faded from my thoughts,
but they were rapidly reignited when Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to Old
Trafford from Sporting Club Lisbon. Cristiano had played against Manchester
United in a pre-season friendly in the Portuguese capital and made such an
impression on the United players that they urged Sir Alex to sign him,
whatever it cost!
He made his debut, as a second half substitute, against Bolton Wanderers and
was an instant hit with the Old Trafford crowd, who, it has to be said, know
a little bit about the game. His brief appearance in the side was captivating
and he immediately became a firm favorite with the club's supporters.
It took Cristiano no time at all to establish himself in the Premiership and
he quickly went from strength to strength under Sir Alex’s careful guidance.
Football supporters adore exciting players who posses flair and individual
ability, and Cristiano certainly slots comfortably into that category.
Already an integral part of the Portuguese national side, he had a fine 2006
World Cup in Germany, but was caught up in that controversial incident,
involving Wayne Rooney, which had England supporters up in arms. He had to
expect a rough ride when the new season began, but a new Cristiano emerged
from jeers and boos as an even more accomplished professional. The derision
quickly evaporated as the people who had sought to deride him realized that
their efforts were merely inspiring the Manchester United winger.
Manchester United proceeded to claim their 16th league championship, with
Cristiano instrumental in that success. He had silenced all the critics who
expressed the view that he wouldn't be able to handle the pressure from the
England fans, and I even suspect that some of them harbored a grudging
admiration for the youngster as the season reached its dramatic climax.
It has been a pleasure to watch him over the past few years and I look
forward, with relish, to future seasons and witnessing Cristiano's
development into an even more exceptional player.
We at Old Trafford are proud that his future is to be at Old Trafford, which
can only be good for the club and equally beneficial for Cristiano, a truly
great talent!
