Neville: This club will never die

Neville: We Can Get Through Anything
Gary Neville believes United's morale-boosting victory over Chelsea
proves the club are capable of handling anything.
The England defender, who is set to resume training after recovering from
a groin operation, watched from the stands as Darren Fletcher's looping
header gave the Reds a deserved 1-0 win over the Champions.
After a difficult week at Old Trafford, both on and off the pitch,
Neville says the rip-roaring support from the United faithful
throughout the clash with Jose Mourinho's side symbolised
the unique spirit of the club.
"It's been a very dificult week at Manchester United
with a lot of criticism coming our way," Neville said in his column
in The Times. "But this result shows we can come through anything.
"People love taking shots at United and they've had a field day
in the past few days, but we need to stop that. We've got to use
this result as a springboard to stop that criticism.
"The fans were singing a song called We'll Never Die at the end of the game
and I genuinely believe that is the spirit of Manchester United.
It never dies, this club.
"It may go through tragedy, disappointing runs or so-called crises,
but it always responds."
The victory leaves United ten points behind the league leaders
with a game in hand.
Although Chelsea still hold the upper hand in the title race,
Neville believes United will take some stopping if they continue to
perform in the same vein as they did against the Londoners.
"We've set ourselves a standard now in terms of a desire
and level of performance," says the 30-year-old.
"If we don't reproduce that throughout the campaign
we'll be underachieving and we'll be robbing ourselves of
what could still be a really special season.
"But if we perform like we did against Chelsea we'll take some stopping.
I'd never say we're out of the title race. It's only November
and my experience suggests that you're never out if it at this time of year.
"We went on a hell of a run from this time last year until March.
Ultimately it didn't get us anywhere, but if we do it again
we could make inroads into Chelsea's lead.
"We have to produce the consistency that we're capable of
and if we do that you never know."

Win proves United will never die
By Gary Neville
The Manchester United defender believes his team found their voice
to answer the critics (Gary預計對Charlton時可上場!!!)
IT’S BEEN A VERY difficult week at Manchester United with a lot of
criticism coming our way, but this result shows we can come through anything.
People love taking shots at Manchester United and they’ve had a field day
in the past few days, but we need to stop that. We’ve got to use
this result as a springboard to stop that criticism.
The fans at the end were singing a song called We’ll Never Die
and I genuinely believe that is the spirit of Manchester United.
It never dies, this club. It may go through tragedy, disappointing runs
or so-called crises but it always responds.
The players certainly showed a response yesterday and proved that
on our day we are a match for Chelsea. There’s never been any doubt
at United that we can beat them, just like when we play Arsenal.
We can compete against these teams.
Where Chelsea have been stronger than us recently is the consistency
in winning against teams you’d expect to beat.
That’s where we’ve let ourselves down. We’ve set ourselves a standard now
in terms of a desire and level of performance, and if we don’t
reproduce that throughout the season we’ll be underachieving.
We’ll be robbing ourselves of what could still be a really special season.
If we perform like we did against Chelsea we’ll take some stopping.
I’d never say we’re out of the title race.
It’s only November and my experience suggests that you’re never
out of it at this time of year. We went on a hell of a run from this time
last year until March. Ultimately, it didn’t get us anywhere,
but if we do it again we could make inroads into Chelsea’s lead.
We have to produce the consistency that we’re capable of
and if we do that you never know. I’ve seen teams’ confidence drift away
but we have to put Chelsea under pressure. We’re the club
that can put them under pressure. I genuinely believe that.
I’ve seen José Mourinho’s comment that we were lucky yesterday
but he also said it was a great game with no difference
between the winners and losers, which is spot-on.
The difference between the sides was our start to the game.
Our determination gave us the edge and we deserved it.
In any part of any game you can be in trouble against Chelsea
but we handled them very well. We got to Joe Cole quickly,
we got to Damien Duff quickly and got lots of tackles in.
The back four were brilliant and the way Rio Ferdinand and Mikael Silvestre
handled Didier Drogba was crucial to our success.
I watched the game at Anfield a few weeks ago, when Drogba gave Liverpool
a tough time, but we stopped him in his tracks.
Alan Smith was fantastic throughout the game.
I don’t know how many tackles he made but he was everywhere.
It was a really good team performance from us but what we have to
think about now is what happens in two weeks’ time against Charlton Athletic.
You have to give credit to Chelsea for their second half but they found
that Old Trafford is still a hard place to come.
With our backs to the wall Manchester United are very difficult
to play against.
The likes of myself, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Gabriel Heinze
and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now need to get back and help the others.
When you’re injured you feel helpless and I want to start contributing.
I start training today and should be fit to play against Charlton,
though it’s going to be hard to get back into the team.
