Neville v Neville 內維爾對內維爾 :P
Saturday, 13 August 2005.
Everton and England’s Phil Neville is one of our new columnists here
on TheFA.com. It could be a massive season for him, beginning with
his first Premier League game against…Manchester United
Hi,
And welcome to my new column on TheFA.com.
I must say it’s been a life-changing last couple of weeks for me really.
From being settled at United, where I’d been for the last 18 years,
I changed clubs in the biggest move that has ever happened for me
professionally.
It’s been unbelievable really. It will probably be another couple of weeks,
when everything has settled down and I’ve been able to take stock,
that what’s happened will actually sink in.
As a professional footballer, you come to the stage in your career
when you want to make the next step. That next step for me was
playing regular first-team football.
I had always said to myself right from the start at United
that the minute I stopped progressing would be the time to move on.
I had got to the stage where there weren’t so many chances for me
at United and my progression was not moving as fast as I wanted it to be.
I’m now at an age when I need to be playing every week
so I took the decision, in conjunction with the manager at United,
to play my football elsewhere.
It was a joint decision. We spoke to each other at length
about everything and it was very amicable,
which was the way I wanted it to be.
I’d always said that if I did ever leave United I’d want it to be
on the best of terms and that is how it’s been.
You don’t spend that amount of time at one club and
not make some very good friends.
Obviously my brother is still there and so is Scholesy and Giggsy.
They will remain my friends for life, as will the staff
who were all fantastic to me.
At the moment, walking into Everton Football Club every day
gives me a feeling of excitement. It’s something new and
that is probably what I’ve needed; I’ve got the excitement
back into my football.
My first game against Villarreal was unbelievable.
It felt like it was a big game and it was a big game.
It’s a new challenge and, being honest,
I see this as one of the biggest professional challenges I’ve ever had.
I want to make this move work.
I thoroughly enjoyed the game on Tuesday.
Obviously I didn’t enjoy the result but the reception,
both for myself and for the team, was incredible.
I only hope that the support will remain that good for the rest of the season.
Now we have the start of the Premier League season.
I’m not sure who we’ve got on Saturday to be honest with you!
Oh yes, it’s Manchester United!
Obviously it will be a bit strange from my point of view
and a difficult game for us from a team point of view.
Last season Everton beat United at Goodison so a repeat would be good.
I have never played against Gary - ever.
Even in school games we were always on the same side.
The only time I’ve ever been against him is in training
so that will be unusual for both of us.
But it had to happen one day and I’m glad it’s early
because it gets it out of the way and allows me to concentrate on
the rest of the season.
Enjoy your weekend,
Phil Neville
Phil's next column will be in a couple of weeks.
