Richardson Injury Not Serious
Kieran Richardson had a scan on his thigh muscle on Thursday, but the
injury he sustained on England duty is not as serious as first feared.
Reports suggested the 20-year-old would be out for several weeks, but that
is not the case. In actual fact he is more likely to miss seven to ten days
of action.
Phil Bardsley is now likely to be drafted in at right-back for the trip
to Sunderland, with John O'Shea moving across to deputise at left-back;
18-year-old centre-back Gerard Pique will be on the bench.
Bardsley會踢右後衛,O'Shea回到左後衛的位置。18歲中衛 Pique 則將坐在替補席。
Speaking at his pre-Sunderland press conference, Sir Alex Ferguson said:
"He had a tight thigh muscle before he joined up with England which he
didn't tell anyone at the club about. So his enthusiasm to go and play
for his country has caused this really.
"England recognised the injury and sent him for a scan on Monday but nothing
really showed up. He tried jogging on Tuesday but in the end they sent him
back to us. I think he'll be out for around seven to ten days and Bardsley
will now come into the side."
United go into the clash with Mick McCarthy's side looking to maintain
their four-game unbeaten run at the Stadium of Light.
Their last visit, just over three years ago, ended in a 1-1 draw but it
was the sending off of Roy Keane after a clash with former Republic of
Ireland team-mate Jason McAteer which stole the headlines.
Sir Alex is not ruling out the prospect of another fiery encounter but
the United boss insists he has complete faith in his players to deliver
the right result.
"We know we're in a very competitive league and when you go to a place
like Sunderland you expect a battle," he explained. "But these are bridges
we have to cross.
"We dropped points against the smaller clubs last season and we don't want
to be doing that again.
"Coming up out of the Championship division is not easy and Sunderland
will be aiming to make sure they survive in the Premiership.
"There are some glimmers of hope for them in the form of the other promoted
teams - Wigan and West Ham - who have both done well, and Sunderland will no
doubt be saying to themselves, 'if they can do it, so can we.'
"It won't be an easy game but we're all looking forward to it."
Report by Ben Hibbs, Gemma Thompson and Steve Bartram.
