Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly been told by the
Glazer family to spend whatever it takes to make up ground on Chelsea.
United finished a distant third behind the Blues in the title race last
season, and already trail them by 10 points this term.
Now, according to the Daily Mail, the Glazers are set to give Ferguson almost
unlimited access to the club coffers in a bid to catch the Roman
Abramovich-funded Londoners.
That will be good news to the restless Old Trafford faithful, who were told
Ferguson would have ?5m to spend each summer following the May takeover.
That outlay did not materialise in the summer as the signings of Park
Ji-Sung, Ben Foster and Edwin van der Sar were virtually cancelled out by
sales.
Now, with nine senior players out injured and Roy Keane coming to the end of
his United career, new blood appears essential at Old Trafford.
The club are already further behind Chelsea having lost out to them in the
race to sign Michael Essien from Lyon.
Ferguson was interested in Essien, who he saw as the perfect replacement for
Keane, but couldn't match the ?4m fee Chelsea came up with.
And the failure to sign the Ghana ace was again highlighted in midweek when
the player was outstanding in Chelsea's 4-0 Champions League rout of Real
Betis.
