Keane's departure in quotes
18/11/05 5:04 PM
The news of Roy Keane's departure from United has rocked the football world.
Former team-mates, coaches and every available football pundit
has had their say. Here, ManUtd.com rounds up the best of the reaction...
"The best midfield player in the world of his generation,
he is already one of the great figures in our club’s illustrious history."
- Sir Alex Ferguson
"Every relationship ends and you move on quickly.
It was never going to go on forever.
I feel privileged I had three years working with him.
He certainly opened my eyes to what it takes to be a top athlete
at a top club and I've taken many lessons from working with Roy."
- Steve McClaren
"Roy Keane will be remembered as a true leader and one of the best players
this club has ever had. It seems unthinkable to have Manchester United
without Roy Keane but ten years ago you could have said the same
about Bryan Robson and all the other great players.
He's done so much for United and his name will be remembered forever.
Roy is as big a player that the club have had and will have for a long time,
but a club like United always moves on."
- Nicky Butt
“He was certainly United’s most inspirational player in the last 10 years.”
- Arsene Wenger
“Roy was an extremely powerful figure at Manchester United
and an exceptional player. I’m flabbergasted.”
- Ray Wilkins
“The fans will be upset because they loved him down there
- and so did I when I played there. He was a great leader.
The best thing about Roy Keane is that you knew where you stood with him.
If you did something wrong he'd tell you but if you did it right
then he'd also tell you - in his own way. Every player looks up to him
for leadership."
- David Beckham
"He's been an unbelievable player for United and one of the greatest
the club has ever had. He's given so many years of great service
and has always had that desire to get the best out of himself
and the players around him."
- Frank Stapleton
"I was there for 11 years, but the day they tell you your career
is no longer going to be with Manchester United, it's a real bolt
from the blue. It takes a while for you to recover from it
and I would think Roy will be no different at the moment."
- Lou Macari
Report by Ian McLeish.

British clubs interested in Keane
A host of British clubs are interested in signing Roy Keane
after his shock departure from Manchester United.
Celtic are the favourites to sign the 34-year-old, but Portsmouth,
Wigan and Bolton are also interested.
But Spurs coach Martin Jol has ruled out a move while Everton boss
David Moyes declined to comment on Keane after Saturday's defeat
to West Brom.
And Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce has not ruled out
trying to persuade Keane to cross the city. (Pearce以前是Keano在森林隊的隊長)
CELTIC
Celtic chairman Brian Quinn:
"Would he fit into Gordon Strachan's plans? The team is playing very well
at the moment and they look settled.
"You wonder whether you would want interrupt things, but that's up to Gordon.
The other question to consider is the business side.
"We would have to wait and see what Roy Keane is proposing,
if indeed he's looking for anything at all from Celtic.
"When he first talked about leaving United as far as I can see
the word Celtic didn't pass his lips."
MANCHESTER CITY
Manager Stuart Pearce:
"We are certainly looking at players who might improve our team
- we always are and always will be and Roy is a good player,
one who can improve our team.
"He is a good player and that is borne out by the number of teams
who have been associated with a player who has only been released
by his club for a couple of days.
"He is a big, big footballer, he has got leadership qualities in abundance,
he's got ability in abundance and wherever Roy goes to play his football
now I'm sure he will be a credit to that side he joins."
WIGAN
Chairman Dave Whelan:
"If Paul Jewell came to me and said to me can we go and sign Roy Keane
I'll back him.
"They all say he will go to Celtic, but let's wait and see."
PORTSMOUTH
Official club statement:
"Following instruction from Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric,
the club's chief executive Peter Storrie is making enquiries
about Keane's availability.
"Mandaric believes Keane is exactly the kind of positive character
Portsmouth would welcome."
TOTTENHAM
Coach Martin Jol:
"It's against everything we believe, we have very good players in that area.
"Carrick is on the fringe of the England team, I have Jermain Jenas,
Edgar Davids, I can play Pedro Mendes there - I think we're just fine
in that area."
...AND THE REST
Bolton boss Sam Allardyce has admitted Keane's wage demands for Bolton
could be prohibitive.
The Sunday People claims Everton boss David Moyes has sounded out
Keane's agent Michael Kennedy about the Irishman's plans although
the Scot has not confirmed his interest.
And the same paper says that Keane himself would favour going to the Toffees
or Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, a report in the Sunday Times claimed an unnamed Serie A club
wants to bring Keane to Italy.
