Rio Urged To Sign Contract By Fergie

Sir Alex Ferguson has urged Rio Ferdinand to sign his contract so
Manchester United can concentrate on a good start to the 2005/06 season.

Ferdinand’s agent, Pini Zahavi, is expected to resume talks with Reds
chief executive David Gill in the near future to negotiate a new deal
for the defender, whose current contract expires in two years' time.

United kick off their pre-season preparations against Scottish First
Division side Clyde on Saturday and Sir Alex is determined that he has
a settled, fully-fit squad for the Champions League qualifier on 9 or
10 August.

Ferguson wants a more positive start from his side in the new season -
the lack of which last term left an irreversible points gap between
United and Chelsea. Attempting to achieve that would be “solidified
by Rio signing his contract”, the manager said.


"We want Rio to sign now because it will put the whole matter to rest,"
Ferguson said.


"It has created speculation and an unnecessary agenda for the club we
don't want.

"Rio has received a fantastic offer and I think there is going to be
another meeting between his agent and David Gill, which I hope will
happen soon.

"We want to be ready for the Champions League qualifier next month
with everyone currently at the club remaining here. That can be
solidified by Rio signing his contract and I hope he does."
