Man Utd chase Brazilian defender
Manchester United are keen to sign ￡8m-rated Brazilian right-back Cicinho,
who BBC Sport understands has flown to England for talks at Old Trafford.
The 25-year-old Sao Paulo defender would not require a work permit as he
qualifies for a European passport through his Italian grandfather.
Milan and Juventus have also been tracking Cicinho, who is tipped to replace
Cafu in the national team.
But United seem in pole position to sign the player on a four-year deal.
Cicinho has been capped by Brazil six times and was impressive during the
recent Confederations Cup.
Should he join United, it could signal the end for Gary Neville, whose brother
Phil left the club to join Everton last week.
And it may go some way to appease fans concerned there is no money for
transfers following Malcolm Glazer's takeover.

Sao Paulo deny Cicinho bid

SAO Paulo have denied receiveing any bids for Brazilian defender Cicinho,
who reportedly held talks with United on Wednesday.
The right-back has also been linked with a move to AC Milan this summer
but the club claim they have yet to receive a proposal.
"There hasn't been any offer made to Sao Paulo," said an unnamed club
executive on the Sao Paulo official website.
The Braziliian outfit did confirm that the player, who is under contract
until 2008, has held talks this summer with several European clubs.
"He (Cicinho) is in Europe and he must be negotiating with a club because
his agent is with him.
"But any negotiation must be accepted by Sao Paulo, who own 60% of Cicinho's
sporting rights."
Marcelo Gouvea, president of Sao Paulo, told O Globo TV: "I will do
everything to keep the player at Sao Paulo but if the English were
to pay (US) 12million dollars for his transfer there is nothing I can
do to keep him."
The 25-year-old was granted permission to travel to Italy in order to
finalise the paperwork to acquire his Italian nationality, which would
open the door for a future in European football.
Cicinho attracted the attention of several European clubs following his
performances for Brazil during the Confederations Cup earlier this year.
He is seen as the likely to successor to Cafu who hopes to win a record
third World Cup winners medal next year before his likely retirement.

西尼奧便成為了歐洲足壇炙手可熱的球星，作為卡福在巴西國家隊的天然接班人，意甲的
AC米蘭和英超的曼聯兩大豪門都有意將其招致麾下。就在12小時前，歐洲著名媒體天空體
育還透露西西尼奧準備飛抵英倫與曼聯進行會晤。在這種情況下，巴西聖保羅俱樂部不得
不站出來對這些傳聞進行澄清。據英國著名體育網站sportinglife最新透露，巴西聖保羅
俱樂部董事會已經否認他們收到了任何歐洲俱樂部對西西尼奧的出價。不過他們並不能保

奧留在聖保羅，但是如果英國俱樂部能夠支付1200萬美元的轉會費，那麼我們很難阻止他
離去。」馬塞羅所言的「英國俱樂部」很可能指的就是曼聯。
雖然按照西西尼奧之前的聲明，他希望在2006年世界盃後登陸歐洲，但是如果有俱樂
部能夠提供給他滿意的條件以及主力位置保證的話，這名右後衛很可能提前離開聖保羅。
這場圍繞西西尼奧的爭奪戰究竟誰是最後的勝利者，恐怕只有時間來證明了。

他真的是後衛嗎！感覺是前鋒阿 XD (穿2號球衣)
遠射能力很讚！！，定位球似乎也滿行的，
也能頭球(跳好高！)，反應很快，一些球都是補射進的。
如果我們真的要簽Cicinho，在看完這段影片，(音樂配得好 ^^)
我只能說搶阿！一定要搶到！！！！！
我覺得10M以下都能接受～
據說我們和Sao Paulo有合作關係，如果我們真的要簽Cicinho，
不知道有沒有佔到便宜～ ^^
不過他是巴西球員，我們才剛走一個Kleberson。Orz
希望若真的要簽他，以往南美球員在曼聯的不適應，不會影響到Cicinho的決定～

According to the headlines,
Manchester United are chasing a Brazilian defender.
But Sir Alex Ferguson is barking up the wrong tree
if he expects Cicinho to do much in the way of defending.
In contemporary Brazilian football the balance of a full-back's game
is strongly weighted towards attack - and that is especially true
in the case of the Sao Paulo flyer.
Cicinho is at his happiest bursting down the wing - squat and fast,
like a right-footed version of Roberto Carlos.
In recent times he has been unleashing a Roberto Carlos-style rocket shot
- a fact that illustrates why the 25-year-old has suddenly become a star.
A natural athlete, he has worked on his football
and now has an excellent range of attacking skills to go with his speed.
His crossing has improved, he has developed the ability
to play one-twos at pace on the edge of the opposing box
and he is now a regular scorer and creator of goals.
He was a key part of Sao Paulo's recent triumph in the Copa Libertadores,
South America's equivalent of the Champions League,
and came to global attention in the final of the Confederations Cup,
where he helped set up all of Brazil's goals in the 4-1 win over Argentina.
Cafu has had Brazil's right-back berth to himself for a decade.
In all that time Cicinho represents the biggest threat he has faced.
It was for this very reason that Cicinho seemed willing to delay
his move to Europe for another year.
Keen to make sure of his place in the 2006 World Cup squad,
he was fretting about the possible consequences of crossing the Atlantic;
a new club in a new country may give him problems of adaptation
that might mean that he lost form at the decisive moment.
Money talks, though, and glory tempts but if he does make the move
to Old Trafford there will surely be problems of adaptation to overcome.
Even in Brazilian football, Cicinho has had problems operating
in a 4-4-2 system and in the Confederations Cup Brazil took time
to incorporate him into their back four.
He is best-suited to Sao Paulo's 3-5-2 formation
- the extra centre-back gives him the protection to push forward at will.
Manchester United may well find that his defensive deficiencies
are exposed when played as a conventional right-back.
He will certainly struggle in the air at the far post.
But pushing him forward to the right side of midfield
may not be the solution. Cicinho is not a winger,
with the trickery to beat players from a standing start.
He is first and foremost a runner and to be effective
he needs to build up a head of steam by starting his runs from deep.
These were exactly the problems that Roberto Carlos faced
when he first moved to Europe. It seems to have been generally forgotten
now but the great left-back was not a success in his time with Inter Milan.
The Italians mistrusted his defending and found him unsuited to midfield.
His career was revived when he moved to Real Madrid
and was given license to roam from full-back.
Can Cicinho fit into Manchester United?
Are Manchester United prepared to change their style to fit him in?
These are the fascinating questions to be answered
if the Sao Paulo flyer touches down at Old Trafford.
