Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is celebrating the dramatic
capture of Michael Carrick after reaching agreement with Tottenham
in a deal worth ￡14 million.

Following high level talks between Old Trafford chief executive David Gill and
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy over the last few days, Tottenham are believed to
have accepted United's offer for the talented 24-year-old star.

Carrick is currently in Germany as part of Sven Goran Eriksson's England squad
and he will join his new United team-mates for pre-season training once a
medical and the final negotiations of his package have been finalised.

The move represents a stunning coup for Ferguson who has been scouring the
world for a top class young midfielder following the departure of Roy Keane
last season.

After checking stars like Deportivo La Caruna's Argentinian Aldo Duscher,
fellow countryman Juan Riquelme from Villareal and Lyon's Mamahoud Diarra,
Fergie has decided English is best - with Carrick recognised as a burgeoning
talent.

Spurs initisally rebuffed United's interest, but with Ferguson adamant the
club should push the boat out for Carrick, Gill was given the go-ahead by
Florida based owners the Glazers to make Tottenham an offer they couldn't
refuse.

That hit ￡14 million - and Spurs are believed to have said yes to United
enabling White Hart Lane boss Martin Jol to recruit a top class replacement.

Carrick came through the West Ham youth academy and starred in the club's
FA Youth Cup success in 2000. He made his debut for England against Mexico in
2001 but injuries hampered his progress at international and club level
before he sealed a ￡2.75million transfer to Spurs two years ago.
He returned to the England set-up for last summer's tour of the USA and
and impressed when starting in the friendly success against Uruguay.
