Sir Alex: We're all praying for Best
28/10/05 12:11 PM
Sir Alex Ferguson says everyone at the club is "praying and hoping"
that George Best can overcome his current health problems.
Best has shown signs of improvement at Cromwell Hospital in west London,
and is described by medical staff as stable but still "very sick".
"Everyone at the club is praying and hoping he pulls through
after this dip in his health," Sir Alex told reporters on Friday.
"He's had a few health problems over the last few years,
but I think we're all rooting for him."
The United boss described the former Reds winger as the best British player
of all time, placing him alongside the game's greats, Pele, Cruyff
and Maradona.
"Everybody has their own opinion about the greatest footballers,"
Sir Alex said. "My particular all-time great was Pele
because he was from my era.
"Over the years we've had Cryuff from one era and Maradona from another.
That is the fascination of football, and it will keep going on that way.
"But it terms of British players, you would find it difficult to
pick anyone better than Best."
Best is in intensve care at the west London hospital,
where he has been treated since 2 October.
His condition worsened on Wednesday after suffering a bowel infection
and internal bleeding. But the 59-year-old's has seen an improvement,
though he remains seriously ill.
"All in all we are pleased with the progress he has made,"
Professor Roger Williams, his consultant, told reporters outside the hospital.
"He is a little better than he was last night,
but he is still a very sick man."
The 59-year-old, who had a liver transplant in 2002,
has spent three weeks at Cromwell Hospital,
though his condition worsened significantly on Wednesday.
Best is one of the most talented footballers to have donned the United shirt,
and is regarded as one of the club's most gifted former players.
He made his professional debut for the Reds in 1963, aged 17.
In 1968 he was part of the United side that became the first English club
to win the European Cup, and was voted English
and European Footballer of the Year that season.
