Portugal have confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will still play in the
World Cup qualifier against Russia despite the sad death of his father.

The Manchester United winger may miss the derby clash with local rivals
City on Saturday but is to take his place in the Portugal side
for Wednesday's fixture.

The FPF, Portugal's footballing federation, issued a statement
confirming that the decision to play had been taken after talks
with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Dinis Aveiro died in London on Tuesday after being hospitalised 
with liver and kidney problems and United have already stressed 
their thoughts are with the ex-Sporting wide man at this difficult time.

Ronaldo had informed O Jogo that he was looking forward to tackling Russia
in a key game for his country.

"I am 200 percent ready!" he claimed. "I am well enough
and ready to help the team.

"It's a decisive game and difficult for us and for the Russians.

"We are used to hostile environments.

"We have an excellent team, we have excellent players
and what we all want is to win."

Ronaldo Misses Manchester Derby


Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo
will not be involved in the Manchester derby.

The 20-year-old has travelled to his homeland Portugal to attend 
the funeral of his father Dinis Aveiro, who died on Tuesday.

When asked if he had any injury worries ahead of the derby on Saturday,
Sir Alex said: "There are a few bumps and bruises
and we'll have a look at that situation today.
But the nucleus of the squad is okay."

The visit of City will see the return to Old Trafford of
former United striker Andy Cole.

The 33-year-old forward bagged 121 goals during a seven-year career
with United and famously forged a formidable partnership
with Dwight Yorke during the Treble-winning season of 98/99.

Despite the fierce rivalry between the two Manchester sides,
Sir Alex is confident Cole, who has found the net twice
in his first four games for his new club, will be given the recognition
he fully deserves.

"I don't think Andy will get a bad reception," insisted the Boss.
"Our fans are the fairest in the country
and I think they recognise the job that Andy did for this club.

"City have had a good start to the season and Stuart
has got his team playing the way he played."

"He was here for seven years and he helped us win the Treble
thanks to that fantastic partnership with Dwight Yorke
 - I don't think our fans forget these things.

"He probably won't get the same reception as he did
when he was at Blackburn and Fulham but nonetheless
I don't think he'll get a bad one."

Like United, City go into the game in excellent form.
Stuart Pearce's side currently lie second in the table
 - one point ahead of the Reds - after recording three wins
and a draw in their opening four matches.

"They've had a good start to the season and Stuart has got his team 
playing the way he played," observed Fergie. "They're aggressive, 
determined and he's got them organised.

"It's difficult to say how they'll approach Saturday's match
but they'll obviously have a game-plan that will be aimed at
