Fergie Backs Aids Campaign
Sir Alex Ferguson travelled to the United Nations in Geneva on Tuesday
to take part in the launch of UNICEF’s global campaign for children
and AIDS, ‘Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS’.
Sir Alex, an Ambassador for the club’s global charity partner,
announced Manchester United’s commitment to supporting the campaign,
saying: "A child dies of an AIDS-related illness every minute of
every day and globally, 15 million children have already lost
one or both parents to AIDS.
"Together we can launch a successful campaign that changes attitudes,
perceptions and ultimately behaviour, but the global campaign
on children and AIDS will only succeed if we truly unite,
and work together to drive out stigma and halt the spread of the AIDS virus."
"Manchester United is ready to play its part," added the Reds boss.
"Like any team we must be focused, committed and work hard to get a result.
We are playing for a win; a landslide win against a tough opponent – AIDS.
Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS.”
The club has already funded HIV/AIDS awareness programmes in China,
Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Over the coming years the club’s attention
will turn to sub-Saharan Africa where the disease is most rife.
UNICEF Ambassador Quinton Fortune visited HIV/AIDS projects in Soweto,
South Africa earlier this year and saw first-hand just how timely
and necessary this campaign is.
Besides raising funds for UNICEF’s vital work with affected children,
the players will lend their powerful voices to the campaign
helping to raise awareness about the issue among children worldwide.
