Ruud: Neville the right choice

Ruud: Gary Is The Perfect Captain
Ruud van Nistelrooy has backed Sir Alex Ferguson's decision
to make Gary Neville club captain.
The Dutch striker led the team in five recent games,
but isn't disappointed to miss out on being the long-term successor
to Roy Keane.
"I took great pride in leading the team out in a difficult period,"
he admitted. "We had to bounce back from the 4-1 defeat at Middlesbrough
and everything else that happened after that.
"I enjoyed it a lot and it gave me great pride, but I would make
the same choice as the manager.
"I think Gary is a perfect captain for our team.
He's been at the club his whole life, has won everything in football
and has great experience and character.
"You can't wish for any more in a captain."
United face Portsmouth on Saturday in the first game of
a hectic December which sees van Nistelrooy and company
squeeze nine games into four weeks.
With 21 league points up for grabs and a make-or-break
Champions League clash with Benfica looming,
van Nistelrooy is well aware of the significance for a productive month,
and also the need to rediscover consistent home form.
"It's a massive month," he said. "There's seven league games for us
including five home games.
"The Chelsea game was a big turning point in the season
where we had a good home win, but we have to make sure that
we get the performances in at home as well.
"Our away record is the best in the league, so now we have to be
the same at home and make sure that we build on the three wins
[against Chelsea, Charlton and West Ham] and hopefully get a good run going."
The Dutch striker also spoke of his memories of Wednesday night's
moving tribute to George Best.
He recalled: "It was an emotional occasion, a wonderful tribute
to a wonderful player and to be out there on the pitch with the 1968 team
and Callum [Best, George's son], with the fans holding the posters up
was just a magical moment.
"I felt such a big united feeling. I felt a big part of the club,
we had a very common feeling in these difficult days."
