The club's youth system has always yielded dividends, never moreso than the much-famed 'Class of '92' from which Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, Butt and the Neville brothers graduated into the first team together. And 18-year-old defender Pique feels the current crop of burgeoning talent has the wherewithal to emulate that feat. He told United magazine: "It is very special to keep playing with the same players. "It would be nice if in a few years time there are four or five of us playing in the first team, just like in 1992 when Giggsy, Scholesy and Gary Neville went up together. "And I think we have the players to do that at the moment, if we keep working hard." Pique came on as a second-half substitute in United's Carling Cup fourth round win over West Brom, a result achieved with a surprisingly experienced team. However, if Sir Alex Ferguson opts to field a more youthful side in the quarter-final and beyond, Gerard is adamant he and his young cohorts have what it takes to make progress. "I think we have some good youngsters," he said. "I don't know if the boss will keep playing the same team in the competition but I hope he does play some young players because I think we're good enough to keep winning."
