The gap behind Chelsea could be down to six points on Saturday,
and Edwin van der Sar say it is about time United make their own impact
on the title race.
It could prove to be a critical weekend in the title race as the Reds
travel to Villa Park on Saturday and could close in on Chelsea,
who play Arsenal on Sunday at Highbury.
"We're unbeaten in five now," says van der Sar. "But we know we need
six or seven wins in a row. We can't draw or lose games.
"[In the title race] you have to do it yourself, we won't catch Chelsea
if we are dropping points.
"Even though I don't think Chelsea are playing that well at the moment,
they are winning 1-0. That is what counts in football.
"We played well on Wednesday against Wigan, but hopefully we can get
good performances hand in hand with results."
The 4-0 win over Paul Jewell's side was a convincing victory
and restored confidence following the previous seven days
which saw United exit the Champions League at the group stages
and draw with Everton in the Premiership.
"We needed the victory over Wigan desperately," van der Sar conceded,
"especially after the draw with Everton at the weekend.
"That result was a bit of a bummer because we knew we had three games
to play before Chelsea played again.
"The manager explained to us what we did wrong against Everton;
we rushed things too much and didn't relax and play football.
"Playing good football at a high tempo is what it's all about at United.
That's what we did against Wigan and what we should be doing more often."
The recent press criticism of the team - highlighted by Sir Alex earlier
this week - is something that van der Sar is used to having played
for two of Europe's biggest clubs, Ajax and Juventus.
But the 34-year-old acknowledges things are slightly different in England.

"Ajax is a big club in Holland, but you cannot compare it to Juventus
or United," he said. "At Juventus, if you lost then the headlines
would be there.
"But in England it's a bit different in the way the newspapers
react to things that happen and their, how would you put it,
advice that they put in themselves."
Football is a results business, a fact that is accentuated
at Old Trafford where defeats are quickly termed 'crisis'.
"Of course, you've got tension at Manchester United," admits Edwin.
"We need results at the moment and we have to win again on Saturday."
