Gill: Rooney not for sale

David Gill says the club's new owners, the Glazers, will not be tempted
star players such as Wayne Rooney.
The United chief executive also says United are looking to make one
further signing before the new season begins in August.
Asked if a big money offer for Rooney might entice the club's American
proprietors into cashing on Old Trafford's most valuable playing asset,
Gill was adamant in his response.
"I think I can say that Wayne Rooney will definitely not be sold," he
told BBC Radio Five Live.
"Very few top-class footballers leave Manchester United," he added.
Challenged on whether a ￡60million bid for the player United signed
from Everton for an initial ￡27million would be too difficult to refuse,
Gill said: "Success on the pitch drives everything so, I don't think so.
"We fought long and hard to get Wayne Rooney last summer and we were
delighted with that purchase.
"He is only going to get better as a player. He is contracted until 2010
and is one of our long-term assets."
Having already signed goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and waiting on a work
permit for Ji-Sung Park, Gill reiterated Joel Glazer's promise that there
would be no set limit on Sir Alex Ferguson's transfer spending.
And Gill says United are in the market for another player this summer.
"There's not a cap," he said. "If you look at what we have done already,
we have signed Edwin van der Sar and hope to acquire Ji-Sung Park once he
gets a work permit.
"There were discussions before the takeover took place with Sir Alex and
Carlos [Queiroz] as to where we need to strengthen.
"We've made two key acquisitions already, and there's one other place we
are looking at. But, by and large, the team is in good shape.
"Money will be made available. The Glazers have made that clear. We've got
to see what transpires but I don't think we need a huge investment in the
club."
