Sir Alex Ferguson feels Edwin van der Sar has the tools to fill
the boots of Danish legend Peter Schmeichel at Manchester United.
Great Dane Schmeichel left Old Trafford in 1999 and Ferguson has
failed to truly replace the keeper, despite trying a string of
options including Fabien Barthez, Mark Bosnich and Tim Howard.
The Scot has now plumped for experience in the guise of Dutch
international van der Sar and he feels the former Fulham man can
take on the mantle and aid United's quest for honours.
"When you have had a great goalkeeper like Peter Schmeichel in your
team it is inevitable there will be comparisons and you can't get
away from the name being mentioned," Ferguson told the Manchester
Evening News.
"We decided to combat that and to cope with it you had to go for
experience and personality. That's why we went down that route
and got Edwin van der Sar.
"He has got experience in abundance. Captain of Holland, nearly 100
caps and a Champions League winner and great years with Ajax, plus
Premiership experience with Fulham. It's what we needed."
Ferguson feels van der Sar's excellent on-field communication skills
will aid United next term.
"He talks all the time during matches," he said. "It was one of the
things I noted about him whenever we played against him. He keeps
everybody on their toes.
"Fabien Barthez talked a fair bit when he was here but it was mainly
in French. That was okay for Laurent Blanc and Mikael Silvestre but
Edwin communicating in English will be a major help for the defence."

雖然舒梅切爾離開曼聯隊已經有六年，但是他在曼聯球迷心目中仍然是最有影響的門
神。不過他們今年夏天迎來了另外一位外籍門將，荷蘭人范德薩。主教練弗格森週二在接
受採訪時對范德薩寄予了厚望，他相信荷蘭人會取代丹麥人在球迷心中的地位，成為曼聯
新一代門神！
「把年輕的門將跟舒梅切爾比較是件難事，」弗格森說，「但是當你得到一位偉大的
門將時，你難免會把他與舒梅切爾聯繫在一起。我們需要有個性的、富有經驗的球員一起
跟我們繼續戰鬥，這也就是我們為什麼選擇范德薩的原因。」
現年34歲的范德薩上個月從富勒姆隊轉會到了曼聯，具體轉會金額並未向世人透露，
弗格森聲稱荷蘭人豐富的大賽經驗是最吸引他的地方。「他(指范德薩)有著豐富的大賽經
驗，作為荷蘭隊隊長身經百戰，並且曾代表阿賈克斯隊贏得過歐洲冠軍杯的冠軍，另外他
還有著代表富勒姆隊征戰英超賽場的經驗，這一切都是我們想要的。」弗格森毫不掩飾他
對范德薩的賞識。
自從1999年舒梅切爾離隊之後，曼聯隊花了很長時間來尋找他的繼任者。澳大利亞人
博斯尼奇、意大利人泰比、法國人巴特茨都沒能取得像丹麥人那樣的戰績，北愛爾蘭人卡
洛爾與美國人霍華德在上賽季都有過不錯的發揮，但是他們仍難以替代當年舒梅切爾在球
隊中的地位。
在上賽季結束後，曼聯隊與卡洛爾以及第三門將、西班牙人裡卡多解約，而霍華德最
近則與球隊續約至2009年。新賽季的英超范德薩會把守好曼聯隊的城池嗎？讓我們拭目以
待。
