Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to criticise his players in public after a disappointing week that saw United lose 4-1 to Middlesbrough and 1-0 to Lille. The Reds have come in for fierce criticism from all directions but the United boss insists he won’t be joining them. On Sunday he will celebrate 19 years as manager at Old Trafford and won’t be altering his stance of never speaking negatively about his players. "It’s not been any tougher than any other week where we have had bad results,” he told reporters. “We’ve had difficult periods over the years and you have to deal with it. "Of course there is criticism and you have to deal with it. Criticism comes from all directions at this club and what you have to do as manager of this club is to make sure the criticism remains inside our doors. I’m unremitting on that point, unequivocal. My stance is there and I won’t change. "You don’t criticise any Manchester United players outside the doors. I’ve never done. I won’t." United have been under the media microscope following two below-par performances and defeats this week, certainly not ideal preparation for Chelsea’s visit on Sunday. "The criticism from the media is not a problem for me because we expect it,” Sir Alex said. “What I have to look at is how the players have been affected by it, particularly the younger players. That is natural, we’re not different from anyone else in that respect." The past seven days have been a learning curve like no other for United’s young players, and Ferguson says there is a responsibility among the supporters to recognise their affect on the fresher faced members of his squad being asked to cover for more experienced campaigners. "We have got to be careful with young players that the crowd don’t have an influence in the sense of the player’s perception of what people think of them," he explained. "Over the years our supporters have had their favourites and their not-so-favourites. I can make a great case in point; Brian McClair was never a spectacular or stylish player, but he was one of the best players this club has had because he was a magnificent team player. "Everyone has their assessment and opinion of players, but what we can’t do is allow Manchester United players to be demolished by criticism. "The best way to react, without question, is to win the match. Sunday is an opportunity because I think we have the ability win the game. Maybe this is exactly what we need; the challenge of playing against a very good team where you know that mistakes can be costly." The Reds raised their game for the visit of Arsenal in October last year when the Gunners came to Old Trafford on a 49-match unbeaten run. Sir Alex is hoping for a similar response this around, though he believes Jose Mourinho’s men are made of tougher stuff than Arsene Wenger’s side. "We stopped Arsenal on 49 games, we made sure of that. There are some similarities, but I think Chelsea are made of sterner stuff. They are a very powerful team and committed to defending. It’s not going to be easy to beat them, but I think we can. We need to start well and make them think for a bit. I know we have the ability to do it. "If we get a good start and the crowd really get going then they’re a formidable lot our lads. I certainly don’t think they will let the players down."
