as he recovers from a groin strain.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came through 77 minutes for the reserves on Thursday
but is not yet ready to return.
Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 20 league games
against Aston Villa and they take that record into Saturday's encounter.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side bounced back from a disappointing draw
with Everton to wallop Wigan Athletic 4-0 in midweek
and another three points is a must ahead of leaders Chelsea's
tough-looking trip to Arsenal on Sunday.
Villa have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 17 Premiership
meetings with United and David O'Leary has been dealt a savage blow
by the news that Olof Mellberg is sidelined for the festive period
with a hamstring problem.
The Villa skipper will be sorely missed with O'Leary facing a dilemma
as to who should partner Liam Ridgewell at the heart of the defence.
One solution is to recall Mark Delaney at full back as he is available
after a groin strain, and switch Aaron Hughes to centre back.
Rio Ferdinand should be fit enough to start for United after
scoring his first goal for the club in the win against Wigan
before being substituted as a precaution.
Fellow striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took his Premiership tally
for the season to 12 with a penalty on Wednesday, has a great record
against Villa, bagging seven goals in his last eight matches against them
in all competitions.
