MATCH PREVIEW
"A small club with a small mentality" is how Sir Alex Ferguson provocatively
dismissed Manchester City ahead of the new season. How City boss Mark Hughes
and the blue half of Manchester will relish reminding Ferguson of that quote
should they topple the champions on Sunday.
Always a keenly-contested affair, this weekend's derby promises to be the
most intriguing for years. City are out of the Premier League starting blocks
quicker than ever before and proved against Arsenal last week that they are
serious about their intention to shake up the 'big four'.
The Eastlands club will feel they have already dealt United one psychological
blow, having tempted Carlos Tevez across the city. But with the Argentine
likely to miss out on his return to Old Trafford due to injury and Robinho,
Roque Santa Cruz and top scorer Emmanuel Adebayor also sidelined, City could
find themselves lining up against the champions with Craig Bellamy as a lone
striker.
United haven't looked back since that shock defeat to Burnley and warmed up
for Sunday's derby with a winning start to their Champions League campaign in
Istanbul.
Last weekend, Tottenham's early-season optimism suffered a reality check at
the hands of the Red Devils. By the full-time whistle on Sunday, we should
have a clearer idea whether United's wealthy neighbours can be considered
contenders or pretenders.
MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
‧ There have been 151 Manchester derbies. United have won 61 to City's 41.
‧ Manchester City have only won one of their 12 trips to Old Trafford in the
Premier League (February 2008).
‧ City were the last team to beat Manchester United on a Sunday in the
Premier League - since then United have won 11 and drawn three.
‧ Mark Hughes has won two, drawn two and lost five of his eight league
matches against his former manager Sir Alex.
‧ Carlos Tevez scored in this fixture last season while playing for United.
Man Utd
‧ Since losing to City in February 2008, United have lost just one of their
26 games at Old Trafford (against Liverpool in March 2009), winning 23.
‧ United have won 12 and lost just one of their last 14 Premier League
games. They are chasing a fifth successive victory in all competitions.
‧ Wayne Rooney has scored five goals in his last five league matches. He has
been caught offside 13 times this season - more than any other player in
the league.
Man City
‧ City are chasing a sixth consecutive league win and a seventh in all
competitions.
‧ This is City's best-ever start to a Premier League campaign and their best
top-flight start since 1961-62 when they also opened the season with four
wins. A win on Sunday would equal the five successive wins at the start of
the 1912-13 campaign.
‧ City have been winning 1-0 at half-time in all four of their Premier
League matches so far this season.
‧ City have already equalled last season's total of away victories, having
won two on the road so far.
‧ If City lose, it will be their 200th Premier League defeat.

M.E.N Prediction: United 2-1 City

home and City are under strength
Key opponent:
Gareth Barry - class midfielder has settled in seamlessly at City and is a
key cog in the Blues machine
Skysports.com prediction: Man Utd 2-1 Man City
One to watch: Wayne Rooney
Lawro's predictions Man Utd 2-1 Man City
City will be without Adebayor, Robinho and probably Tevez for this game, and
it's very difficult to attack United and try to take the game to them when
you've got players like that missing. People are saying it's the first time
in nearly 40 years that they've gone into a derby on near equal footing - but
it's only September, so I wouldn't read too much into that.
It will be tight, but Fergie made five changes for the Champions League game
the other night and he's rested a few players. So I think United have got
enough to win it.
