Wilf McGuinness︰Delighted at Queiroz Comeback
Wilf McGuinness was speaking exclusively to ManUtd.com's Ben Hibbs.
It was no surprise to me that Manchester United and Carlos Queiroz have been
reunited, but it is a decision that I am very pleased to hear has been made.
It didn’t take long from him leaving Real Madrid to coming back here, so I
think that is an indication, firstly, of how highly he is rated by Sir Alex
Ferguson, and secondly, how much he enjoyed his time at Manchester United.
All the signs suggest he made a real difference when he was here. He’s very
popular with everybody at the club. All the players I have spoken to tell me
he knows the game inside out.
You don’t get much of a chance at Real Madrid. I got longer in my time as
manager at United. Carlos will have learnt a lot from his time at the Bernabeu.
He’ll have new ideas, some on what not to do as well as what he can do.
One thing that Carlos Queiroz did do was to challenge the players every day,
to give them targets to achieve each time they turn up for training, not just
on the pitch and in terms of winning trophies.
The players were very fit and technically improved. When you look at the likes
of Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, Scholes - the more experienced players in the squad -
they’ve won all the game has to offer; but to have a new challenge every day
is vitally important.
Sir Alex can give the players that motivation when he is talking to them before
and after games; but having somebody to implement that on the training ground
improves players by the 1 or 2 per cent that really makes the difference at the
top level.
Carlos' language skills are also useful. We saw that during his previous spell
here. He helped one or two of the foreign lads settle in and he can further
improve the communication between the coaching staff and players when you have
players from all around the world like we have at United.
It’s all falling into place quite nicely now. Our squad is already looking
stronger with the emergence of Fletcher and Ronaldo, the signings of Smith,
Saha and hopefully a few more to follow, and Carlos returning. We have Rio
Ferdinand to come back from suspension and hopefully one or two of Sir Alex’s
other signings from last summer to settle in. Carlos is an excellent addition
to Manchester United.
