問:俱樂部已經不斷地否認范尼斯特魯依會離開曼聯。那俱樂部有沒有什麼方法來結束這個
流言呢?(Andrea Barton, UK)
答:我們不能做什麼。Ruud已經非常清楚地表示，Sir和俱樂部也是。Ruud是我們未來4年陣
容裡不可缺少的一名成員。而且，他也已經續約了。
問:你有沒有後悔沒有簽下小羅，但你看到他上賽季在巴塞的表現?如果在這個夏季你也看
到類似他的球員，俱樂部會不會傾巢而出來得到他? (Matt Jackson, Sale)
答:不會，我們仍然繼續組建一隻歐洲頂級球隊。如果我們發現一名類似小羅的球員，我們
會和教練討論，先看我們的轉會資金，然後看他是否適合現在的陣容，以保證我們的球
隊仍然是歐洲頂級球隊。Sir就是經常尋找那些會給曼聯帶來不同的球員。這就是為什
麼他是這幾年裡最棒的。
問:有關對肯揚在引進小羅失敗的轉會上的批判，你有沒有什麼想說呢? (Tom Gadsby, UK)

答:我不覺得有人可以把霍華德或羅納爾多比著Fiestas除非我看過哪些他們參加足球以外
的比賽。當然，我們必須要給哪些球員時間。像是克拉伯森必須要有一些時間來適應
這裡。看其他的巴西球員，如艾度，他在阿森納頭三年並不順利。但是上個賽季，你
可以看到他的表現。所以，克拉伯森仍然有4-5年的時間可以證明自己。
問:董事會用多少的資金來購買Sir要簽的球員? (Calvin Kuek, USA)
答:我們會有一個會議。Sir會根據他的眼光和球探的報告來確定他的目標。通常都會有2-3
個在同一個位置上的目標。然後，我們就會決定哪一些最適合我們的資金籌備。我們會
在根據我們所訂下的上限來開價。不像其他的俱樂部，我們不會沒有計劃地運用我們的
資金。我們有一個限度，就像其他合理的生意一樣。那就是平衡法。我會和Sir討論有

The club have repeatedly denied that Ruud van Nistelrooy is not leaving the clu
b, yet still the rumours persist. What more can the club do to end these rumour
s about Ruud's future? (Andrea Barton, UK)
「We can』t do any more. Ruud has been very clear on it through the media, as h
ave Sir Alex and the club. Ruud is an integral part of our planning for the nex
t four years, as per the new contract he signed. That is the situation but we h
ave to get on with it. And the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.」
Do you regret not signing Ronaldinho last summer after seeing his performances
for Barcelona? And if a player of similar ability became available this summer,
would the club go all out to get him? (Matt Jackson, Sale)
「You have to say he had a great second half of the season at Barcelona when th
ey stormed up the Spanish league. Do you regret? No, you』ve got to move on and
make sure we deliver and build a team that can challenge at the top in Europea
n football. If another player like Ronaldinho came along we would have to asses
s it. We would have to look at it with the manager, look at our budget and dete
rmine whether the squad needed strengthening to ensure that we can get back to
the top of European football. Sir Alex is always looking for the player who』ll
make the difference at Manchester United. That's something he has been excelle
nt at over the years.」
There has been some criticism of Peter Kenyon for the Ronaldinho deal falling t
hrough. What would you say about that? (Tom Gadsby, UK)
「I personally don』t agree with that. Peter worked very hard and I was assisti
ng him in certain areas but it wasn』t meant to be. You get a feeling with cert
ain players that they』re desperate to come to you. With others, you sense they
』re not and that they』re using you in terms of the wider negotiations. Ronald
inho probably fell into the latter category. I think he probably had his mind s
et on going to Spain and that was the situation. I personally don』t think the
club or the board could have done more to get him. We basically met his wage de
mands and we made a very, very significant offer to PSG. They chose not to take
it and went for a deal with Barcelona instead. Personally I think that critici
sm of Peter is unwarranted.」
Do you look forward to the summer and the transfer activity that comes with it?
Or does the intense media interest in transfers make it a difficult period for
you? (Neil Atkins, Wolverhampton)
「I look forward to the challenge. There』s always a buzz, a sense of excitemen
t, and a sense of real pride, I suppose, if you bring in a top player that can
hopefully really add to our team. Every deal is different. Some go smoothly whe
reas others are perhaps more problematic. What we have to do is identify our ke
y targets, keep them to ourselves and then go after them. The media frenzy will
have us linked with many more players than we are actually after. I know ManUt
d.com track the numerous players we are linked with in the papers and it』s alw
ays a long list!"
A lot of United fans believe the club bought a fleet of Fiestas instead of a Fe
rrari last summer. Will United be buying a Ferrari this summer? Jason (Salford)
「I don』t think anyone could class Tim Howard or Ronaldo as Fiestas unless I a
m watching a different game of football to them! As for the other players, you
』ve just got to give them time. Young players like Kleberson can take a while to
settle in. Look at another Brazilian, Edu, for example. For his first three ye
ars at Arsenal, Edu played second fiddle to Gilberto Silva but last season ever
yone was raving about him. We bring in players on four or five year contracts s
o let』s view them in the medium term, not after one season."
How much of a say does the Board have in the players that Sir Alex signs? (Calv
in Kuek, USA)
」We have a discussion. Sir Alex will identify the key targets with his knowled
ge and his scouting reports. There may be two or three for a particular positio
n. Then it is a matter of deciding what the best use of our funds is. We do hav
e to operate within budgets. Unlike some clubs, we』re not in the category of h
aving unlimited funds. We do have a limit on our funds like any sensible busine
ss has. That』s a balancing act. I discuss Sir Alex』s targets with him and pri
oritise them. We (the Board) have a say but ultimately no player comes to Manch
ester United or leaves Manchester United without the manager』s approval which
is entirely appropriate.」
With the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid spending hundreds of millions on play
ers, how difficult is it not to lose sight of bringing young players through th
e ranks? (Mike Green, Eccles)
」Manchester United, over the years, has always been a club with the ability to
spend large amounts of money in the transfer market, on players like Ruud van
Nistelrooy and Rio Ferdinand. But we also have a tradition for bringing young p
layers through. We』ve seen that this year with Darren Fletcher coming through.
So it』s a combination. We do have the power and the financial muscle to compe
te effectively in the transfer market but let』s be honest, if we』re up agains
t Chelsea and they desperately want a player, they will probably outbid us. But
they can』t get every player. In a straight fight with them, we may lose out.
That』s why our (scouting) network needs to be good so we can identify the othe
r player. If they (Chelsea) have got their number one priority, we can go for t
he other guy."
Roy Keane has been quoted as saying that the overall package at Manchester Unit
ed is better than the rest. Would you agree? (Michelle O'Riordan, Cork)
」Well, I don』t know all the details of the other clubs but Roy』s clearly hap
py with his package. Thank you for that, Roy – I』ll remember that next time y
ou』re in for a renegotiation! But yes, we are one of the top payers in English
football, if not European football. We make sure we compete effectively for pl
ayers. You only have to read the papers to get a sense of what players earn –
not that you should believe everything you read in the papers! Players are quit
e rightly very well renumerated for their services.」
