Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to close the door on the signing of a new striker
before the transfer window closes on August 31.

Manchester United had been expected to try and wait until January before
launching any bid for Everton's Wayne Rooney as the England international is
currently recovering from the injury he sustained at Euro 2004.

However, the Old Trafford club have a striking crisis with Ruud van Nistelrooy
and Louis Saha sidelined and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer out for the entire campaign.

Such is the extent of the problem that Ferguson has put the block of any
transfer of Diego Forlan to Levante, although quite whether the disappointing
Uruguayan is the answer to the difficulties is open to debate.

Rooney's foot injury may well exclude him from the Scot's thinking for now,
but the situation has changed somewhat for the FA Cup winners recently.

Alan Smith's arrival from Leeds United has at least provided one solution for
United, and he looks set to lead the line against Dinamo Bucharest in the UEFA
Champions League qualifier on Wednesday.

Ferguson was asked directly at a press conference if he would sign a
replacement for Solskjaer before the transfer window closes at the end of the
month.

"I can't answer that one really," he confessed. "I'm not really sure of that.

"At the moment, we are just taking stock of our situation.

"Ruud is a straightforward one, he should be back training certainly in a month
 and should be back playing in six weeks so we know the timescale there.

"As for Louis, it's a bit more difficult to assess just when he's going to get
 back but we hope three weeks will see him back playing."

Ferguson has a tough decision to make as United have a daunting trip to Chelsea
on Sunday and the Old Trafford outfit will not want to be too far off the pace
when the transfer window shuts and come Rio Ferdinand's return in September.

Stretched United Consider Adding Striker

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson today confirmed he is weighing up
whether to sign another striker before the transfer window shuts at the end of
August.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has a hernia problem and Louis Saha a medial ligament
injury and the shortage of strikers has been exacerbated by news that Ole
Gunnar Solskjaer will miss the rest of the season after a knee operation.

With three of his four first-choice forwards ruled out, the situation is a
taxing one for Ferguson ahead of tomorrow night's Champions League qualifier
against Dinamo Bucharest.

Wayne Rooney is the obvious candidate but Ferguson would need to convince the
United board they need to buy the ￡30million-rated Everton striker.

Asked if he was looking to sign a replacement for Solskjaer before the end of A
ugust, Ferguson said:

'I can't answer that one really, I'm not really sure of that.
 At the moment we are just taking stock of our situation.

'Ruud is a straightforward one, he should be back training certainly in a month
 and should be back playing in six weeks so we know the timescale there.

'As for Louis it's a bit more difficult to assess just when he's going to get
 back but we hope three weeks will see him back playing.

'He's able to do his preparation work and rehabilitation work at the moment
 without affecting his injury so when he gets back he should be straight into
 football training, we are hopeful of that.'

The alternative to signing a player such as Rooney is to seek a short-term
solution, bringing in a player on loan or a free transfer to help United out
of their current predicament. Strikers such as Real Madrid's Fernando Morientes
, who spent last season on loan at Monaco, could come into that category.

Ferguson is without nine first-teamers for the first leg in Bucharest due to
injury, suspension or the Olympics and the United boss believes Dinamo will be
no pushovers - noting that Steaua Bucharest gave Liverpool a test in the UEFA
Cup last season, drawing at home before losing 1-0 at Anfield.

He added:

'It's not a great situation to be in for us - obviously it would be preferable
 to have all your players but from time to time during the season you are
 always going to have players injured and we are in a bad spell at the moment.

'Of course it would be preferable not to be in the Champions League qualifying
 stage but it has happened in the past, two years ago, and in fact when we won
 the competition in 1999.

'We have got experienced players with us, the Community Shield game on Sunday
 will have brought them on but Dinamo will be difficult opposition - they are
 a decent team.

'My experience of Romanian football goes back to my Aberdeen days and it has
 always been healthy. Steaua Bucharest had a good performance last year against
 Liverpool and if you take that as a barometer it should be a good game.'

Romanian double winners Dinamo have two players suspended - goalkeeper Cristian
Munteanu, who was sent off for handball against Slovakian champions MSK Zilina
in the second qualifying round, and Ionut Badea who will miss both legs.

Ionel Danciulescu is the dangerman in Ioan Andone's side - he scored both goals
in the 2-0 aggregate victory over Zilina and was also the top marksman in the
country last season with 21 goals.
