Figo for Fergie

ALEX FERGUSON has made a shock ￡5million move for Real Madrid star Luis Figo.

The Manchester United boss believes he can convince winger Figo, 31, to quit
the Bernabeu on the cheap and help him reclaim the Premiership title from
Arsenal.

Fergie sent Old Trafford officials to Spain yesterday to open talks with
Figo, who cost Real ￡37m from Barcelona in 2000.

Figo has one year left on his Madrid contract but has already admitted he plans
to leave on a free transfer next summer, with Real reluctant to offer a new
deal.

Ferguson wants the former Portugal skipper now to ease his injury crisis with
Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha crocked.  （？）

If the switch goes through Figo, who speaks perfect English, would compete with
fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo for a place on the right wing.

And it would see him trade places with Real team-mate David Beckham, who
vacated the role at United last summer in favour of a ￡25m move.

Figo said:

“It would be a dream for me to play in England — but dreams don’t
  always happen.”
