JUSSI TO MANYOO
Sir Alex Ferguson has now been linked with a third keeper as his
search for a replacement for Tim Howard continues. Fergie has
apparently lost patience with the American’s increasing number
of errors and has, according to The Daily Mirror, today targeted
Bolton's Jussi Jaaskelainen to replace him. The Red Devils saw
Carlo Cudicini commit himself to Chelsea while there has been no
response from Middlesbrough, who were apparently offered Philip
Neville in exchange for Mark Schwarzer. The 29-year-old
Jaaskelainen would cost around £4m.

Carroll deserves United chance
by Paul Townley - Last Updated 28 Sep 2004
Manchester UnitedManchester United look certain to welcome back Rio
Ferdinand when they face bitter rivals Liverpool on Monday, but who
will line up behind him is less certain.
Following some indifferent form by Tim Howard, United's perennial
back-up Roy Carroll could be handed responsibility to stop the flow
of opposition goals.
The Northern Ireland international has played 23 times for The Red
Devils in The Premiership and has only been on the losing side once,
against Portsmouth last April.
Since signing from Wigan Athletic, Carroll has saved 82 percent of
goalbound shots, significantly more than higher profile shot-stoppers
Fabian Barthez and Tim Howard (both 73 percent).
Even more impressive is the time required by United's opposition to
score past the ex-Wigan custodian.
On average, Carroll has been beaten just once for every 160 minutes
played, and massive 67 minutes more than any of his United team-mates.
The table below contains all Premiership data for the last five seasons.
