CRISTIANO Ronaldo wants to stay at United despite Real Madrid's growing
interest in luring him to La Liga.
The Spanish press have been floating rumours that Bernabeu coach Vanderlei
Luxemburgo is an admirer of the Reds' 20-year-old Portuguese winger.
A swap deal involving Michael Owen is being touted, but United are hoping
to put together a new contract deal with Ronaldo, who signed for ￡12.5m
from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2003.
A teenager on his arrival at Old Trafford, Ronaldo was in the lower pay
bracket among United's seniors, and now wants his progress recognised.
His agent Jorge Mendes believes he has a world superstar on his books
but reckons Ronaldo is keen to remain in Manchester.
"In three years he will be the best player in the world. I've got no
doubts about that," said Mendes.
"He has huge ambition. At Sporting he used to be in the gym, working
out an hour before training. There were lots of clubs after him, all
the big names from Italy and Spain, but when I sat down with Alex
Ferguson I knew it was the right choice.
"Sir Alex told me that Cristiano would play one week and then have a rest,
then play, then rest and that he wouldn't be burned out.
"I think he will stay at United, but I also have to do the best for
my client. He signed the existing contract at the age of 18, after
only a handful of games for Sporting. Now he's developed into a star."
Burn-out
Reds boss Fergie has taken every precaution to avoid the burn-out threat
by allowing Ronaldo two Christmas breaks in his first two seasons with
the club.
But the last 12 months have been draining for the Madeiran. Last June,
he played a key role in steering Portugal to the final of Euro 2004.
That tournament followed on from his first season in England and he was
then almost immediately thrust into the Olympics with the Portuguese
Under-20 squad.
After their exit in Athens, he was soon back playing for the Reds and
then went on to make 49 appearances for United.
Ferguson has demanded that United's squad return on June 27 for pre-season
work, which will involve a family holiday and bonding session in Portugal.
It is designed to ensure the Reds hit the ground running in August.
However, Ronaldo has only just completed his season, having played
two World Cup qualifying internationals for Portugal.
He scored the winner as they beat Estonia 1-0 in Tallinn last week,
adding to his strike in the 2-0 victory over Slovakia in Lisbon four
days earlier.
On Friday, Ronaldo is off on his travels again when he flies to Asia
to help raise funds for victims of last Boxing Day's Tsunami.
In Aceh, he will meet with Martunis, a small boy who was found in the
aftermath of the disaster wearing a Portuguese shirt.
