Manchester United's striker worries have intensified after Louis Saha
was rated doubtful for tomorrow's Community Shield with a knee injury.
Sir Alex Ferguson is already without Ruud van Nistelrooy, who will undergo
hernia surgery next week, and had hoped to field Saha alongside Alan Smith
in Cardiff so that the pair could develop an understanding before Wednesday's
Champions League game at Dinamo Bucharest.
Saha tweaked his knee in the Vodafone Cup victory over PSV Eindhoven
on Tuesday.
"We'd hope Louis would be fit for Bucharest, but it's doubtful we'll be able
to play him from the start on Sunday," Ferguson said.
He needs Saha and Smith "to click straight away".
"They are the strikers I'll consider as my main strike partnership for the
start of the season," he said.
"The important thing is that we remain patient and don't get into a flap
about it."
Ferguson would be excused some concerns. United will be without at least seven
players for the game in Bucharest, with Rio Ferdinand suspended, Gabriel Heinze
and Cristiano Ronaldo away on Olympic duty and Kleberson (knee), Liam Miller
(groin), Quinton Fortune(knee), Van Nistelrooy(groin) and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
all injured. The Norwegian striker will undergo surgery on a long-standing
knee problem and is expected to be out until October.
"We're not dead sure what the problem is exactly but we are optimistic it'll be
sorted out if it's what we think it is," Ferguson said.
This specialist he goes to in Sweden is one of the best in the world and Ole
has got a lot of faith in him.
"Losing Ruud came as a shock, and you have to wonder whether seven days of
training was enough before he played in his first per-season match. He came
in on Wednesday after his 45 minutes against PSV and was feeling his groin.
"At least Smith has been fantastic, a revelation with his enthusiasm for
everything. He gives his all in training and all the lads have been impressed
and are talking very highly of the boy. He's a winner and he's also got that
bit of Yorkshire grit about him, too."
Van Nistelrooy's injury means there is no longer any chance that United
will sell Diego Forlan before the closure of the transfer window at the end
of the month.
