Fergie Hopes For Resolution Of Ruud Injury

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping a scan will determine the exact extent of Ruud van
Nistelrooy's troublesome calf strain.
The Reds striker has been struggling with the injury since being substituted
during the 3-0 win over West Brom last month.
The United boss told reporters at his Friday press briefing that van Nistelrooy
has again been feeling the injury over the last week and was therefore not
risked in the 1-1 draw with Fulham on Monday night.
"The problem still hasn't cleared up," said Ferguson. "We're sending him to
see a specialist today [Friday]. We're at the stage where we want to get to
the root of it.
"It is a bit of a concern because he is the best striker in the business and
we want him back - particularly for the European campaign coming.
"We don't know [how long he will be out for] - that's the issue that is
concerning us. We thought he was almost there at the beginning of the week,
but it has resurfaced during the week."
Sir Alex has no qualms about using Alan Smith in a similar role to the
Dutchman. Smith’s abrasive style of playing – summed up so forcefully
with the sliding challenge that made his goal against Fulham – is an
ideal alternative for United.
His performances have curtailed any doubts that some fans originally
harboured; about his ability to get goals at the highest level – he has eight
in 16 starts; and his allegiances having come from Leeds – Ferguson describes
his dedication to United as heroic.
"He has been terrific since he joined us," says the boss. "He has been a real
hero for us. His goal on Monday night was one of these goals that only that
type of striker can score.
"Some players manufacture goals by beating men – players in the mould of
Henry, Ronaldinho or Ronaldo can make goals on their own. But to make a goal
with a tackle is fantastic."
