Darren Fletcher will miss Manchester United's Champions League double header
with AC Milan and crucial games in both the FA Cup and the Premiership after
being ruled out for the best part of two months with a knee injury.
The midfielder will alos miss Scotland's World Cup qualifier against Italy
next month.
Fletcher sustained knee ligament damage during Sunday's derby against
Manchester City.
Tests have shown the injury to be serious so Sir Alex Ferguson expects him
to be sidelined for at least seven weeks.
The news comes as a massive blow to new Scotland manager Walter Smith who
heads into his first game in charge against the Italians knowing the Scots
are already unlikely to book their place at the World Cup finals.
Ferguson admitted the 21-year-old's injury was a blow for both club and country
.
He told The Scotsman: 'It`s bad news for us and it`s bad news for Walter and
Scotland. 'It does look very bad.
'I`m told he will be out for a minimum of seven weeks but, of course, that is
no certainty. He could be out longer.
'It`s worse news for the lad because he had been playing so well and had so
much to look forward to.'
