penalty area and gave Newcastle scraps

Patrice Evra 6 5.7 Solid defensively but rarely threatened
the Newcastle defense like he is capable of.
Anderson 6 4.4 Not the midfielder's best game and was lucky
to avoid conceding a penalty for a challenge
on Lovenkrands.
Ryan Giggs 7 5.3 Could have won the game with a golden second
half chance. Full of fine deliveries all
night.
Michael Carrick 6 4.8 Good running but lacked the killer touch
in midfield to really hurt Newcastle.
Wayne Rooney 7 5.6 Beautiful long balls all game but never had
an effort that caused Newcastle any damage.
Javier Hernandez 7 5.2 Brilliant movement all game and was involved
in a controversial penalty claim late on.
Nani 7 5.3 Was an attacking threat all night but never
found the accuracy to challenge Krul.
Michael Owen (Sub) 4 3.9 Barely touched the ball upon his introduction
into the game
Antonio Valencia (Sub) 5 4.8 Provided an extra option but was neutralised
well by Newcastle.

onslaught from the Toon as United dominated possession
John O'Shea - 6
Continued to raid down the right flank but got little ball from
Nani. Was rarely troubled in defence and made vital tackle at the end
Patrice Evra - 6
Produced great ball to set up Giggs for what should have been
the opening goal, not tested too much in defence
Chris Smalling - 6
Lucky not to be punished by Lovenkrands after losing him in
first half but recovered well after the interval
Nemanja Vidic - 7
Bloodied but battled on as United's Mr Consistent put in
another solid performance at the heart of defence
Anderson - 6
Lacklustre show and had a lucky escape having made contact with
Lovernkrands in the box in the second half
Ryan Giggs - 5
Should have done better with free header in second half and then
missed an absolute sitter from 12 yards out
Nani - 7
Improved in second half, tested the Toon with a couple of decent
crosses and some lively runs, but no end product
Michael Carrick - 7
Some sublime passing at times and made couple of runs
through the middle but couldn't unlock the door for United
Wayne Rooney - 7
Looked lively after two-match break, but missed a great chance
in first 20 minutes to mark his return with a goal
Javier Hernandez - 6
Missed great chance to put the Reds in front in opening
minutes and then booked for diving in injury time
