Anton Ferdinand could return after a hamstring injury but Kieran Richardson
and John Mensah are out, and Simon Mignolet will keep his place in goal.
Manchester United's Wayne Rooney will not be risked for this match despite
telling manager Sir Alex Ferguson he is fit to play after an ankle injury.
Ferguson will assess the fitness of Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick.

MATCH PREVIEW
- Sunderland's Black Cats have been cursing their luck after two freak goals
on successive Saturdays denied them back-to-back wins over Arsenal and
Liverpool.
- Manager Steve Bruce must feel his side are due some good fortune. Cesc
Fabregas's ricochet gift for the Gunners, and the controversial goal that
came as a result of Michael Turner's 'backpass' at Anfield last weekend twice
left them with one point instead of a potential three.
- But having already beaten Manchester City this season, the Black Cats are
proving to be big game hunters and they now have their sights trained on
Manchester United, who remain arguably the biggest scalp of all.
- This fixture will always have extra resonance for Bruce, given his status as
an Old Trafford legend. But in 15 attempts since moving into management, he
is yet to get one over his former mentor Sir Alex Ferguson.
- This Red Devils team seem to lack the menace of previous incarnations and
they remain without an away win in the league so far this season. Given that
they also endured a gruelling midweek match in Spain against Valencia, Bruce
must fancy his chances of finally breaking his duck.

It was a strange game last week for Sunderland. It seems every time they play
Liverpool there is an unusual incident - and so it was again. For the record,
Dirk Kuyt's strike should never have been allowed and you have to say the
referee was entirely at fault for that.
Now the Black Cats host a Manchester United side that has a terrific record
against them. Just as they have started to pick up one or two points away
from home, I just see Steve Bruce's side slipping up a touch at the Stadium
of Light.
Yes, Sir Alex Ferguson has a few injuries to deal with but he has good
strength in his United squad and, on the back of a good win in Valencia, I
don't expect them to have any sort of Champions League hangover whatsoever.
