Tommy Cavanagh, Manchester United's assistant manager when they won the
FA Cup in 1977, has passed away, aged 78.
Tommy was Tommy Docherty's first appointment when the Doc became United
manager in late 1972. He was on the staff as trainer and then assistant
manager for eight years.
Born in Liverpool in 1928, Tommy had an extensive career in the game. He
played for Preston North End - where he first met Tommy Docherty - Stockport
County, Huddersfield Town, Doncaster Rovers, Bristol City, Carlisle United
and Cheltenham Town.
When his playing days came to an end, he became trainer at Brentford and
later the club's manager. In 1966 former United great Johnny Carey, then
manager at Nottingham Forest, appointed Tommy as trainer-coach at the City
Ground. He was Forest's bucket and sponge man when they finished runners-up
to United in the 1967 First Division title race. In 1971 he moved on to
Hull City, but was only there for a brief spell before being lured to Old
Trafford.
After leaving Old Trafford, Tommy served Newcastle United and then Norwegian
club Rosenborg Trondheim as assistant manager. He succeeded former Reds
captain Martin Buchan as manager at Burnley and was also a coach at Wigan
Athletic for a short time.
Tommy simply lived for football and always demanded 100 per cent from his
players. A no-nonsense character who never jettisoned the elements of his
Merseyside upbringing, he'll always be remembered by supporters for his
shock of white hair and his jovial demeanour.
Everyone at Manchester United sends their sincere condolences to Tommy's
family and friends at this extremely sad time.
