Sir Alex Ferguson is set to name an unchanged team for Saturday's trip to
Portsmouth, although Patrice Evra's return could bolster the bench.
The United boss had no defenders in reserve on Wednesday night - the only
four senior defenders in the squad for the Roma match all had to start.
Evra's recovery is therefore welcome, especially with the second leg
against the Italians only days away.
"Patrice Evra will join us in Portsmouth, he is available," confirmed Sir
Alex.
"However, Park Ji-sung won't be ready. We have sent him to a specialist
to get a further assessment. We are looking at a couple of weeks for him."
Sir Alex was speaking from United's training base in Italy, where the Reds
had elected to stay on after the rigours of Rome before flying to Southampton
airport on Friday afternoon.
"We have done the right thing by staying over," said the manager.
"We've given ourselves the best chance of getting a result at Portsmouth,
which is the most important thing. Yesterday (Thursday) was a recovery day -
the players were feeling it a little bit because of the pace of the game
against Roma.
"I have been looking to see whether I can get some freshness into the team
but the players are quite upbeat about the result in Rome and they look okay.
So the eleven that started on Wednesday will probably be the side that will
play at Portsmouth."
Which means Sir Alex will be hoping for more of the same from most players
- "Ferdinand and Brown did really well, Carrick was magnificent, Rooney and
Ronaldo were superb" - as well as more time on the field from Paul Scholes.
The United midfielder received his second red card of the season on Wednesday
but he's free to play in domestic games.
"He won the game for us against Blackburn last Saturday, with a magnificent
performance," praised Sir Alex.
"If he had stayed on the pitch on Wednesday we might have won the game too.
But these things happen. I don't feel he let us down and I am not going to
turn round and tell him not to tackle. He can tackle, but in a British
style."
The quick switch back to the British game from European football has
occasionally caught United out in the past. But this time, the boss is
more concerned about Tottenham - playing against Chelsea at 12:45 Saturday
after a UEFA Cup tie on Thursday night - than he is about his own players
being ready for 17:15.
"I am amazed Tottenham have allowed it to happen. If the game had been played
at Sunday lunchtime, Chelsea would still have had over two days to prepare
(for Tuesday).
"As it is, Tottenham get 36 hours. It is the Tottenham supporters I feel
sorry for. They have travelled to see them play in Seville and now their
team is asked to play again so quickly.
"It is not easy coming out of a European game. But the one thing that really
helps us is that we are challenging for the league. We have the league title
uppermost in our thoughts. That is the best motivation you can possibly have.
"It is never easy to win at Fratton Park but that is what the Premier League
is all about. We are expecting a tough challenge and I am sure we will get
one. Hopefully we can come away with a win."
