Heinze fights back

GABRIEL Heinze's World Cup dream has put his United career in jeopardy -
but the Argentinian is ready to fight back.
Six months ago he pulled out all the stops following his cruciate knee
ligament injury to appear in Germany.
But the left-back believes he is close to the form that won him Old
Trafford's Player of the Year in 2005.
Patrice Evra, however, has stormed ahead, turning from a ￡5m misfit
after his arrival from Monaco last January into first-choice left-back
for the Reds.
Heinze's situation has alerted AC Milan who have been linked with a ￡6m
January swoop for the 28-year-old.
And his old employers Paris St Germain are also keen on a possible loan
move for the player they sold to Sir Alex Ferguson for ￡6.9m in the
summer of 2004.
But Heinze's thoughts are on the Reds and confining his World Cup gamble
to history.
"I am not far off getting my full form back. I am happy that I am feeling
better with myself," he said.
"The important thing is that I am playing. It is nice to put those fitness
problems behind me."
Injury
Heinze suffered his cruciate knee injury in Villarreal in September last
years in the Champions League.
He rushed back to make Argentina's squad for the World Cup.
When he returned for United's campaign, how- ever, he was put back on a
rehab programme to strengthen his muscles.
It has meant he has started only 11 matches this term, and Evra has stolen
a march.
"I felt I had got back to full fitness for the World Cup. But you always
want more from yourself," added Heinze.
"You set yourself high standards and more important goals. You try to
improve even more. It is important you strive to get better.
"When I decided to represent my country at the World Cup, I didn't just
do it with my heart. I gave it a lot of thought and used my head to make
the decision.
"There is nothing more important in a footballer's life than the chance
to represent your country in such an important competition. I thought I
was fine and when I came back I thought the injury had gone away.
"I had three weeks on holiday and during one of those I didn't do any
work on the leg whatsoever. I thought it was all going to be okay. With
hindsight you tend to learn from these things.
"It is normal to push yourself and try to get more out of your own game."
Ironically, Heinze's club versus country situation almost wrecked his
United career before it even started when he chose to go to the Olympics.
