Evans' stock keeps on rising

Young Reds defender Jonny Evans is yet to make his competitive United debut,
but for his loan club Sunderland and on the international stage with Northern
Ireland he is making huge progress.
After a spell with Royal Antwerp earlier this season, Evans teamed with
former United captain Roy Keane at Sunderland. Since joining the Black Cats
the 19-year-old defender has been a key figure in their rampant surge up
the Championship table.
They are in the fight for promotion and Evans, in Northern Ireland's squad
for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Sweden, is thoroughly
enjoying himself.
"I've been on the losing side in the league only once all season and that
was with Royal Antwerp. It is brilliant at the moment with the club on a
good run and Northern Ireland doing so well.”
Irish boss Lawrie Sanchez is pleased with the player's development and
says playing for his country will continue to aid his blossoming career.
"Jonny's development with Northern Ireland was perhaps the precursor to
him getting a move to Sunderland,” he said.
"He might not have come to Roy Keane's attention playing for Antwerp [had
he not made] his debut against Spain.”
On the contrary, Keane would have known all about Evans' potential during
his final years at United, where the youngster was already highly thought
of in the club’s youth ranks.
But, his debut in the astonishing 3-2 win over Spain and impressive displays
against Denmark and Latvia proved his ability to cut it at the highest level,
which will have undoubtedly aided Keane’s decision to take the youngster to
the Stadium of Light.
"One or two people wondered whether I could play at that level,” said
Evans. "But he [Keane] decided to take a chance on me after the
internationals. Since then my game has really come on at Sunderland,
playing against good, physical players week in, week out.”
His next big step could well be to try and make an impact at Old Trafford,
and, seemingly, the level-headed Belfast-born defender would not be fazed
by the task.
